Assignment Purpose: To write assignments within an English literature class, students must apply academic tone, diction, paragraph structure and MLA skills. This assignment will provide exercises to study these skills and then demonstrate proficiency by applying each skill.
Assignment Objective: Apply course standards regarding writing a literary introduction with a thesis statement, use of quotations, and MLA skills as evidence of basic academic skills regarding writing in response to literature as skills needed to achieve standards within a literature course.

Question #1: Writing an Introduction: Write an introduction for an essay following the specifications in the Review Module regarding introductions for literary essays. Review: Writing an Introduction for a Literary Essay. Also, study writing a thesis with a Topic + Assertion format. Review: Writing a Thesis Statement: Applying Topic + Assertion Method. Provide a thesis that clearly shows a topic and assertion process answering the question, Why or how does Kincaid address the theme of gender roles as the focus of the short story? (2 points) Question #2: Correct academic diction: Write a paragraph supporting the thesis written. This paragraph must use accurate academic diction which means avoid weak verbs and weak words. Review: Achieving Academic Voice: Avoid Weak Diction and all diction links in Review Module for specifics. (2 points) Question #3: Correct usage of quotations: Write a second paragraph supporting the thesis. This time, include correct use of direct quotations by including two short quotes, properly integrated and formatted, by MLA rules within the essay. Review the links regarding correct integration of quotations: writing a paragraph by apply TPPQA formula. In addition, watch the video, below, regarding how to properly integrate quotes. (2 points) Question #4: Correct MLA format: Apply correct format including font, spacing (review information regarding proper spacing between paragraphs with Microsoft files) and other MLA standards such as a correct MLA header for an assignment. Include a correct MLA work cited showing correct formatting for the textbook which list Kincaid, “Girl” as the source. Remember to review MLA to learn how to properly cite “A Work in an Anthology.” Review syllabus to find formatting standards needed for this course.
