Course Objectives: This course is designed to assist you in your transition to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) and to help you progress toward academic and career success while you are a student at Arizona State University. You will learn:
Course materials: An open mind and a willingness to learn (and to admit you don’t know everything)
Class format: LIA 294 is a seminar, in which you are expected to participate. You will be graded on class participation. Participation includes paying attention, participating in class discussions, completing assignments thoroughly and on time, and being respectful of your instructor, classmates, guest speakers and yourself.
Turn in all assignments at the beginning of class. If your assignment is not submitted at the beginning of class, it is considered late. Late assignments will be accepted only with a valid reason and will receive half-credit. Late assignments will not be accepted after 11:59pm on the due date. If you are absent on the day an assignment is due, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to submit the assignment prior to class time. You can submit assignments via email, have a classmate turn it in, or drop it off in Fulton 110.
Attendance is an integral part of the LIA 294 grade. Attendance equates to showing up on time, listening, turning in assignments and participating in class discussions. Points will not be awarded for attendance. However, points will be deducted for missing class, regardless of the reason.
First and second absence: 5 points for each absence deducted from final point total
A third absence indicates you are choosing to fail the course.
Cell Phones: Texting, chatting, talking, or playing on cell phones or laptop computers is not permitted once you enter our classroom. An integral part of your attendance grade is being fully present and engaged in our classroom discussion. Please make sure your cell phone is silenced when you are in class (vibrate is not permitted). Being on your cell phone, in any way, during class constitutes an absence.
Disability Accommodations: Qualified students with disabilities who will require disability accommodations in this class are encouraged to make their requests to me at the beginning of the semester either during office hours or by appointment. Note: Prior to receiving disability accommodations, verification of eligibility from the Disability Resource Center (DRC) is required. Disability information is confidential.
Establishing Eligibility for Disability Accommodations: Students who feel they will need disability accommodations in this class but have not registered with the Disability Resource Center (DRC) should contact DRC immediately. Their office is located on the first floor of the Matthews Center Building. DRC staff can also be reached at: 480-965-1234 (V), 480-965-9000 (TTY). For additional information, visit: www.asu.edu/studentaffairs/ed/drc. Their hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
Academic Integrity Statement: Academic honesty is expected of all students in all examinations, papers, laboratory work, academic transactions and records. The possible sanctions include, but are not limited to, appropriate grade penalties, course failure (indicated on the transcript as a grade of E), course failure due to academic dishonesty (indicated on the transcript as a grade of XE), loss of registration privileges, disqualification and dismissal.
