3.1 Leadership Development Reflection
Purpose
Integrate leadership elements (PSLO 1)
Evaluate decisions from a biblical perspective (PSLO 2).
Scripture
“Brothers and sisters, if someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. If anyone thinks they are something when they are not, they deceive themselves. Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load”(Galatians 6:1-5, NIV).
Instructions
Each week students are required to read a biblically supported devotional geared toward application of a biblical worldview to leadership. The devotional will include a Bible verse, an application, and a set of reflection questions. As a reflection, the parameters of the assignment are flexible. However, students are encouraged to reflect on how the devotional informs their personal leadership philosophy and values.
Leadership Development Reflection 3: Prepare to help others
Topic: Inspire a Shared Vision; Situational Approach, Path-Goal Theory, LMX TheoryBy: Elizabeth K. Hunt
Reflection:
Leaders unite people by assessing and managing the situation, articulating shared goals, and developing relationships. In order to do this well, leaders first need to prepare themselves so that they may best serve and help others meet the challenges of life and work. Christian leaders prepare themselves by first recognizing personal spiritual gifts (Romans 12 & 1 Corinthians 12) and weaknesses (Romans 7:19), preparing themselves to resist temptations, and developing a daily practice of study and devotion to be more like Christ. In actively testing personal motivations and actions (1 Corinthians 10:13), leaders are better equipped to help others. In doing so, leaders build up others, preparing them to, in turn, help others in the same way (1 Thessalonians 5:11). Christian leadership is exponential because the power that fuels it is from God (2 Timothy 1:7). When powered by the grace of God, Christian leaders can meet the challenges of helping others in ways they could never have imagined on their own. Christian leaders will inspire, guide, and build up their followers.
