Journal Assignment Instructions
Overview
There are a total of three journals that provide you an opportunity to engage with psychosocial professionals in the field and apply principles learned from the module. In pursuit of your child life clinical training, volunteer hours must be submitted (preferably in three areas identified) on the child life internship common application. The areas are well children and families, children and families under stress, and children in healthcare. For this assignment, student’s that select the site visit journal will reflect on their completed hours. Students that are unable to volunteer will select the alternative journal. The alternative journal will reflect on three interviews with different psychosocial professionals in each area (1. well children and families, 2. children and families under stress, and 3. children in healthcare).
Instructions
Each journal must follow the respective prompt (site visit journal or alternative journal instructions) below. The journal must include a minimum of 500 words and a minimum of one citation from the textbook. Each journal must follow current APA format. This includes citing and referencing the Bible when it is used as a source.
Site Visit Journal Prompt
Journal: Family-Centered-Care and Child Development
Discuss your initial experience of your site to include any expectations you may have, interactions with staff, and how the site implements child development and principles of family-centered care. A minimum of one citation from the textbook in relation to your experience must be included. To protect the privacy of patients and families, students must comply with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) regulations, never use a patient’s full name. The site supervisor’s name, title, facility, and contact information must be included.
Journal: Children and Family Under Stress
Discuss observations of your site in relation to your reading assignment and experience. One citation from the textbook must be included. Speak with your site supervisor about how they integrate trauma informed care (Chapter 13) and address spiritual issues. Include your personal thoughts about praying and sharing scripture with your patients and families.
Journal: Culture and Ethics
Discuss observations of your site in relation to your reading assignment and overall experience. Interview your site supervisor regarding how they integrate cross-cultural competence in their clinical practice and any experience they may have with your healthcare presentation. The site supervisor must email the professor verifying the completion of hours by Monday of week 6 to receive full credit.

How child development and principles of family-centered-care are integrated in their work

Complete an interview with a psychosocial professional that works with children and families under stress. The journal must include the following:
Professional’s name, title, role, facility and contact information
How the professional integrates trauma informed care ( Chapter 13) and addresses spiritual issues with their clients/patients and families.
One citation from the textbook must be included.
Your personal thoughts on prayer and sharing scripture with patients and families must be discussed.
Journal: Culture and Ethics
Complete an interview with a psychosocial professional that works in a pediatric healthcare setting. The professional must be a child life specialist, social worker, or Chaplin. A professional that works in a mental health facility may not be used. The journal must include the following:
Professional’s name, title, role, facility, and contact information;
How cross-cultural competence is integrated into their facility;
Their role in supporting children with special health-care needs or the dying child and any experience they may have with your healthcare presentation topic; and
One citation from the text must be included.
