Intercultural Communications Manage Culture Shockm Research Project
1) Chapter 11’s key focus discussed managing culture shock and the process of acculturation.
2) Culture shock is when a person is suddenly subjected to a new culture and the person becomes disoriented as a result of all the differences they are experiencing. This can lead to the person feeling irritated, lost, discontent, sad, angry, intimidated, incompetent, and so on. Culture shock can happen when a person moves to a new country and experiences beliefs and values different from his or her own and they are unfamiliar with this way of life, as well as new foods, traditions, language, norms (rules), behaviors, etc. A person can also experience culture shock when moving to a new state, town, school, changes religions, or starts a new job in a new organization that is very different from their last organization such as going from the corporate world to nonprofit, winning an election, etc.
3) Eventually, this person will gradually adapt to his or her new culture. This process is called the process of acculturation, which means the person is not feeling as disoriented and is able to now adopt, acquire, and adjust to the new culture so that they can function within this culture no longer feeling incompetent, angry, sad, lost, intimidated, and so on.
4) Your textbook, Communication between Cultures, discuss for ways how to mange culture shock and enhance (bring about) the process of acculturation on pages 385-386. The four ways that help to do this include: 1) Learn about the host culture, 2) Learn about the language of the host culture, 3) Guard against ethnocentrism, and 4) Stay connected to your own culture.
5) For this paper, choose one of these four ways, define what it is, and explain how that method can be applied to managing culture shock and enhancing acculturation. To do this, you will be required to research what this means and how it can be applied. I will also permit real life examples and you can use yourself to exemplify your point, but if you write a paper just about your experiences only, then that is not counted as a research paper, and you will be deducted major points. So, please limit your example to only about a paragraph to exemplify, and nothing more, as this paper requires you to conduct research, analyze, and write about this specific topic.
Have fun with this project!
2) This paper must follow APA format. This includes a title page, header, numbered pages, in-text citations, reference page, and an abstract. The ENTIRE paper from the title page to the last reference page must be in 12pt Times New Roman font.
3) This paper must have at least 3 different legitimate sources that include a combination from RMU’s database, book/print source, Internet, and can include additional sources such as a reference used from a movie, documentary, case study, historical documents, records, maps, personal interview, etc. Sources that are not legitimate sources include works from popular press, opinion pieces, social media, Webster dictionary, Wikipedia, or online Encyclopedias. Each time you refer and use information from your source, you must cite it. Your textbook can be one of these sources.
Please refer to any APA handouts that may have been given in class, Chapter 19 from your Writing Matters online book, and/or refer to OWL Purdue online writing lab. When using the OWL Purdue website, be sure to write APA in the search bar. Go to: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01…
4) Do not make this project bigger than it needs to be. This paper should not exceed 4 pages of content. Again, this does not include title page, abstract, or reference page. Keep it simple and your scope focused. Have fun with this project!
5) Paper must be written in an academic and professional format and NOT with “casual language”. This is an academic and professionally written paper. In addition, papers must be edited for grammar and style such avoiding wordiness, awkward wording, sentence fragments, comma usage, punctuation, run-on sentences, tense consistency, and other proofreading issues.
