Integrative Analytic of Strategic Management

INDIVIDUAL CASE ANALYSIS – 15%

• Each student will write a case analysis, 9 pages in length.
• External resources are not required for the individual case analysis. An appendix is also not required. The individual case study is designed to focus on the integrative, analytic and reasoning aspect of strategic management.
• Your written individual case analysis is also due at the time of the Power Points and they, too, should be submitted through Canvas.
• The presentation is not intended to be exhaustive. Your papers will be as exhaustive as possible as nine pages allow. The presentation is designed to encourage class discussion.
• The analysis will be using the techniques discussed in class and in chapter 13 of our text. Some reminders are included here:

1. Read through the case completely and thoroughly.
2. Re-read the case and extract the pertinent information.
3. Determine what information is most relevant.
4. Determine what additional information is needed but not present in the case to develop a complete picture.
5. Determine what external factors are impacting the company’s current situation.
6. Determine what internal factors are impacting the company’s current situation.
7. How are these external and internal forces impacting the company’s performance?
8. Determine what assumptions must be made to effectively interpret the given information.
9. Is the strategy the organization is currently using valid as related to the competition in the industry?
10. How does the company achieve a competitive advantage?
11. What are the interrelationships of the major players in the case?
12. Identify the major strategic issues in the case that warrant management attention.
13. Identify courses of action to solve the problem.
14. Your recommendation should derive directly from your analysis and should remedy the strategic issue facing the company.
15. You must provide one broad, all-encompassing recommendation and several tactical directives that will help ensure the company achieve the overall recommendation.
16. Are there any specialized skills needed to solve the problems identified in the case?
17. What will happen if these alternative solutions are not implemented and achieved?

• When writing the report, organize your thoughts to include these sections, and include all these headings, in this order:

1. Executive Summary: This is a one-page summary that is written after completing the entire report. It provides a brief overview of the company, the strategic issue it is facing, your recommendation to remedy the strategic issue and the primary analyses that support your recommendation. A sample executive summary is included in our files folder on Canvas.
2. Introduction: Identify or infer the organization’s current mission, major business objectives, and strategies. Evaluate the effectiveness or appropriateness of these strategies and how well or poorly the organization has performed in meeting those objectives.
3. Analysis of the External Environment: Analyze the important factors, trends, and probable future conditions which may justify the pursuit of key opportunities and avoidance of potential threats.
4. Internal Analysis: What are the organization’s strengths and weaknesses? What are the company’s core competences? Consider the different company functions such as marketing, finance, production and operations, technology and intellectual property.
5. Major Strategic Issue: Based on your analysis, what is the one most important issue facing the company?
6. Recommended Strategies: Make the case for an alternative strategy that you think holds promise for the company’s future success. Be sure to identify the strategy the company is currently using and which you think it should be using. Be sure to formulate a BHAG which envisions the firm’s long-term future and several long, intermediate and short-term strategies which align with the attainment of that BHAG. Remember, you must identify a strategy that is broad in nature – differentiation based, cost based, and focus based. The other recommendations you offer must support this broad strategy.
7. Works cited page: Include any important research materials you used such as industry data, demographic trends and financial data. Be sure to reference this data in the main text and reference your sources. The individual case study does not need to include research.
8. Appendices: Include charts and graphs that help illuminate your argument and reference them in your text. Graphics can elegantly provide detail allowing you to focus on the main points in your written analysis.
