Reflection Essay
“You have to stay in school. You have to. You have to go to college. You have to get your degree. Because that’s the one thing people can’t take away from you is your education. And it is worth the investment.” (Michael Obama) Thus, I became a student in my 30’s investing in myself to find my ego.
This is my second semester in college and I always enjoy each my day of studying. English is my second language and of course I was afraid how I will communicate, give a speech, and all assignments done on time. In addition, communication was always my weakness side, because I am an introverted person. Luckily, our professor is very kind, positive, knowledgeable and always gave us good feedback.
Even in this difficult time she found the best way how to manage in such as short time to change teaching style due to Coronavirus. Business communication class gave me a lot of knowledge and skills with I did not know before such as how to write cover letter, video resume, and informative speech.
Thus, professor taught us how to make a video resume; we should have plain background, properly dress as a physical interview, we should not have large distracting jewelry, not to make camera too close, avoid slang words and fillers, time limit, our tone, body language, everything has importance. It was my first time in life making the video resume and it is helped me see myself from the side.
Also, we had a workshop where explained us the most making mistakes in cover letter and resume such us: structure, bolding special words, size of letters, education, experience, special skills and so on. For instance, I learned that resume should not exceed one page, and I fixed structure and style of my resume.
Also, I did know that resume should be rewritten each time for different job. He explained that it is better to rewrite our resume looking and focusing on specific requirements of employer than send the same resume a hundred times to different companies. I understood that our resume and cover letter is our face, because without a right and well-structured resume potential employer will not even red it.
So, I found this session very helpful and effective. Moreover, each week we had discussion of each chapter with our professor and classmates. I loved how we wrote Journeys for each chapter with meaningful cartoon or advertising picture which helped to remember and finalize the whole idea of the chapter.
However, communication is one of the most important skills for the business nowadays. We never can say that we learned everything because learning is a long process through our life. Thus, my topic for the speech was “Education” because education was my dream from the past, but for some reason I could not get it in full.
While I did my preparation for the speech, I have learned a lot of helpful and beneficial skills, such as doing researches connecting them with my thoughts, text memorizing and accordingly improving my English, using the slides. After my presentation, I had one to one meeting thought the Zoom with our professor, and she gave me warm comments and tips for the future presentations which I will never forget such as: make a video presentation with share screen, make slides with text. Thus, it was helpful because it will prepare me to move to my further education, so I will already know all the skills that I learned in this class.
She was confident and relax simultaneously, so it looked naturally. Her topic of presentation has impact on me because in my home country, the tea has also a special tradition place. We drink tea all year round in hot and cold weather; thus, there is no table without tea, tea is served only in hot form and poured into a special small mug with extended fields.
According to tradition, a new bride pours and serves tea to guests in small quantities thereby showing respect to them. Of course, our tea ceremony is different from the Japanese one, we do not drink tea with sound as Kate showed and explained that it has meaning of respect which was very interesting part of her presentation.
Looking back, all my worries and fear about communication and presentation was evaporated. Business communication class was very helpful I am thankful to our professor for the whole experience and skills that I have learned in class which made me more open, confident and improved myself.
I will not be so stressful anymore when it comes to real job interview, video interview or giving a speech at work. With each semester I gradually get closer to my goal: develop spiritually, get diploma and reach my American Dream. Thank you, a lot.
