What are your research interests in the area of Information Technology? Why are you inspired to research in this area, and why do you think it is important to research in this area?
Why did you select PhD in Information Technology? Why did you select xx university?
As an individual, what are your strengths and weaknesses and how will they impact you as a PhD IT student?
Where do you see the future of Information Technology going and where do you see yourself in this mix after obtaining PhD in Information Technology from xx university?
Course Concerning Culture, Labor or Policy
3000-word researched paper on a topic of your choice from the course concerning culture, labor or policy.
NAME
SUBJECT (TECH + ONE THEME OF LABOR, POLICY OR CULTURE)
RESEARCH QUESTION (that connects your tech to your one theme)
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT (who does it affect, what companies, institutions, people, communities, policies, authorities, environmental factors, ethical and moral implications, design implications, etc.)
3 CLAIMS:
CLAIM 1
CLAIM 2
CLAIM 3
CONCLUSION
———
Following the above instructions, you will select a particular technology by a company or research institute and a theme of (culture, policy, labor) then ask a research question and state the importance of the research question. In writing this submission you may also consider answering: – What are the values? – Who benefits? – How do they benefit? – Who is inconvenienced for that benefit? – Who controls this information system? – Who was able to build this future and who is left out of the dominant narrative?
!!!!!!!!
The purpose of this paper is to produce a clear and compelling argument, a strongly researched answer to a question, and to demonstrate your knowledge of cyborg technologies and their implications. This goes without saying, but as you write this paper, remember that this is a course on cyborgs. Meaning, keep your discussion relevant to subjects of cyborg concern. If you do not mention the word ‘cyborg’ at all in your final paper, for example, think about how and why introducing that word is not relevant for your topic. Including the word cyborg is not mandatory, it is just a suggestion for helping you to stay on topic.
You must clearly state your Topic (a technology made by a company) AND a theme (one of culture, labor or policy) AND a research question that you are answering in your paper. If you do not state your research question or your topic and theme, then you will lose many points. Repeat: make sure your research question is clearly stated. If you have not selected a technology made by a company, then you will be docked points. You must use this technology made by a company as your case to write the researched paper. A technology made by a company allows you to think about where this technology is, who is affected, who is involved in its making, who is involved in its regulation. Abstracted language about “the future of AI” or all of “society” is not compelling research or arguments, is too high level for the purposes of this research project. Instead you will want specifics about how your case provides understanding for what the future of AI might look like, who is responsible, and who it affects, etc.
Stay away from activism in your research questions and claims. Your research questions and claims should not be about doing something, or about being proactive. This means: no language like “How do we offset the stolen labor from factory robots?” or “How can we make more accountability measures for killer robots?” or “How do we make dating apps result in stronger relationships?” Instead, these should look like: “What are the labor implications of Amazon’s factory robots?” or “What are the accountability and current regulatory frameworks for misfire, breakdown or failure concerning killer robots in the US military?” or “What are the dominant relational forms that Tinder is supporting?”
Do not include value judgments in your claims. This means: no language like “Amazon Prime Air is a superior way to deliver packages.” or “Replacing service labor with robots is more efficient than human labor.” These are not claims that can be supported through research. These are opinions and value judgments. Instead, “Amazon Prime Air drone delivery does not require the environmentally-unfriendly fuel of traditional modes of transporting goods, particularly across state lines.” or “Service robots do not respond to environmental stressors in the same ways as human service industry workers.”
Your research question and 3 claims should map directly back to your theme and your technology. If you have selected “labor” as your theme and your claims do not relate back to labor, points will be docked. For example, if you selected a VR training platform as your technology and your claims do not clearly relate to VR training technologies (at least at a broad level, if not your specific platform), you will be docked.
Additionally, if your claims do not have in-text citations that are found in the reference list at the end, you will be docked points.
Successful final presentations and papers often conclude with stating the importance of the research you performed and provocations, open questions or comments that you have uncovered. The exercise for the final reflection 13 will help in uncovering some of the reasons why your research is important.
Remember that you must use in-text citations and your reference list at the end of your piece should matches those in-text citations (no floating references at the end! These do not make sense! 🙂 ) This is for your presentations, if you use slides, as well as the final papers.
On the final paper, you will be plagiarizing if you do not use in-text citations but make a statement about a product, company, social or behavioral pattern that did not come from data that you yourself collected. If you are unclear about plagiarism, you may email me or work with a librarian.
I have opened my schedule to meet with students in the coming week so please take advantage of this and make an appointment with me to ensure your success in the final paper.
