Information-Processing Abilities of Children
1st Project option
Design a developmental game that will facilitate the reading, mathematical, and information-processing abilities of children. Imagine that you are going to market your game as a tool for enhancing a variety of abilities. Any of the following skills could be included in the game to make it easily marketable.

Mathematical Skills |
Information-processing Skills |
word recognition |
quantity |
problem-solving strategies |
phonological awareness |

Your game must include the following components:
- Instructions : you must explain how the game is to be played, including the purpose of the game, the number of players, their ages, rules of play, and any other information necessary to play the game (please include sub-headings to organize your instructions). The page length of your instructions will vary with the complexity of your game, but one or two pages (typed, double-spaced) is usually sufficient.
- Developmental Critique : you must provide a 3-5 page, typed, double-spaced summary of the developmental concepts incorporated into your game, including the reading, mathematical, and information-processing skills enhanced by the game. You will support the relevance of each of the developmental constructs for your game by reviewing published research that supports the significance of each construct to the age group(s) for whom the game is designed.
*Utilize 3 sources to support your essay/critique
(a) Demonstration : This demonstration will require that you create or find the materials necessary to play your game (e.g., a game board, playing pieces, game equipment, etc.)
*If time allows and you have the ability to do so, test the game with children in the age range that the game is geared toward. Report the success of the game.
You will also have the opportunity to present your game to the class.
2nd Project Option
Locate a Stanford-Binet, WISC-R, WPPSI, and/or K-ABC . Examine the test(s) and assess the items and testing instructions, looking for evidence of bias in the test or in the testing procedures
(a) Provide a 2 page typed, double spaced overview of the test, the history of the test, purpose of the test, compare the test you selected with other tests.
(b) Utilize a minimum of 3 pieces of research to support and enrich your analysis of Intelligence testing
(c) Cite your sources
(d) Include a copy of your selected test.
(e) Discuss potential problems that you identify with the test
(f) Why are they problematic?
Part Two- A New Test of Intelligence
After critiquing a specific intelligence test, create a new test of intelligence. To help you design your test, respond to each of the following questions.
- What types of items or tasks will be included in your intelligence test? Describe the various scales included in your test (if applicable) and provide sample items from your test.
- How will you determine if your test is reliable and valid? Describe the procedures you would use to assess your test’s reliability and validity.
- Who should be tested with your test, and how should your test be used? Describe some appropriate and inappropriate applications of your test.
*The explanation of the intelligence test that you have created should be a minimum of 2 pages in length*
3rd Project Option
Evaluating Infant and Child Toys
- Locate 2 or 3 infant and/or child toys
- Assess the infant and child toys with respect to the cognitive challenges or stimulation they provide children.
- What cognitive processes from Piaget’s or Vygotsky’s theories are involved in the toys?
- Can you think of ways to improve how the toys contribute to a child’s cognitive development, language and speech, social-emotional development? Explain.
- What senses are the toys designed to stimulate?
- Are there ways in which the toys can be improved to better enhance perceptual development?
- After evaluating and researching the toys ,can you recommend one over another ?
- Did you find fault with some toys? Explain.
- Include vocabulary words and/or concepts that we covered this semester. Utilize each in context and demonstrate your understanding of the term and/or concept.
- Your paper should be 4- 6 pages typed and double spaced.
- Utilize a minimum of 3 scholarly sources to support your paper
- Remember to cite your sources
- Include pictures of the toys or a link to view the toys
4th Project Option
Parental Observation
Observe parents with their children at the playground, park, grocery store- anyplace where they are likely to see parents interacting with children.
- Observe and report on THREEseparate Parent/Child Interactions.
- Note any disciplinary actions taken by parents in eachscenario.
- What behaviors prompted the discipline?
- What types of discipline did you observe most often?
- Were there differences noted in discipline used by mothers versus fathers? Describe.
- Did sons versus daughters appear to receive different forms of discipline? Explain.
- Did the age of the child appear to influence the type of discipline received? Explain.
- Include vocabulary words and/or concepts. Utilize each in context and demonstrate your understanding of the term and/or concept.
- Your paper should be 4- 6 pages typed and double spaced.
- Utilize a minimum of 3 scholarly sources to support your paper
- Remember to cite your sources
5th Project Option
Identify a significant developmental delay and/or disorder
- Thoroughly research the delay/disorder
- Address the features of the disorder; cause, treatment educational needs and settings necessary resource and services that are provided to the child, more than likely throughout his/her lifetime.
- Make connections between “ on target” child development vs the development and struggles developmentally delayed children face
- Interview a parent and the child who has been diagnosed with the delayed
- Familiarize yourself with day to day routine, lifestyle, sibling comparisons
- Include vocabulary words and/or concepts that we covered this semester. Utilize each in context and demonstrate your understanding of the term and/or concept.
- Your paper should be 4- 6 pages typed and double spaced.
- Utilize a minimum of 3 scholarly sources
- Remember to cite your sources
