Discussion on Imperialism Analytical Essay
Students must write the following question in a research report – using both primary and secondary sources.
The British scholar J.A. Hobson and Russian revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin both condemned imperialism in late 19th century, a ‘big business’ capitalist scheme to conquer colonies for pure economic profit. Colonies gave ‘trusts and monopolies’ for inexpensive raw materials and assured markets in Europe and the USA. But what about ideological issues such as the notion of “civilisation” or manifestation?? By the end of the 19th century, the United States joined other European powers to build an empire. The topic is: What were the main reasons and factors for the US to switch to imperialism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries from isolationism and continental growth?
The paper should be 4-5 pages long (approximately 1500-1700 words not including citations).
The paper must be typed in a 12-point typeface and double-spaced in Times New Roman.
See American Promise, Chapter 20 for background information. You have to offer at least three external sources (in addition to the two provided text), of which at least one must be a primary source.
All sources must be cited correctly following the Chicago Style Manual. At the end of your paper you must additionally offer a separate bibliography. For a link to the Chicago Style Manual, please go to Student Resources.
Rubric – Clearly structured language. Word use, orthography and punctuation are great. Provides complicated and nuanced proof for a thesis.
-The historical backdrop and components of U.S. imperialism should be discussed and analysed.
-Proper use of quotes, correct and precise reference to additional sources.
-Concepts, assumptions and conclusions are articulated clearly and completely. Logical and detailed analysis. Full support of the US imperialism’s ideological motivations or material motivations. Or even discuss a chronological combination of the two (a sign of a more sophisticated essay).
