You will now write a literature review that summarizes the literature on your topic. You should first present your research topic. Use the summary you prepared for Assignment 1 but develop it and state it more precisely. This should be 2-3 sentences and should be easier now that you have some familiarity with the literature.
Select several articles from your annotated bibliography that are relevant to your topic. Read these articles carefully and then present a summary of what each article says.
A summary should note the type of study (survey, experiment, historical case study, ethnography, etc.) and the type of data on which the study is based (study of high school students in New York City or unmarried mothers in California) and then present the main explanations or arguments which are relevant to your research problem.
Your review should also offer your own evaluation of the usefulness of each study. If you can’t find at least three or four articles on your list which seem suitable, you may need to do some further research in the literature. You do not have to use every article from your annotated bibliography.
As you are writing your reviews of the literature, try to make them as useful as you can for studying your problem. Imagine that you are writing this account for an employer in a research organization, who has assigned you the task of reviewing the literature.
You need to lay out for your employer the main points in the literature you have reviewed and present a summary of the information that is relevant and helpful in understanding the problem. The employer’s goal is to do some new research on this problem and maybe propose a new explanation or a new way to resolve the problem. To do this effectively, it is essential to know and understand what others have already done.
The literature review should be 4-5 pages. Be sure to provide the proper citation for each article on a Works Cited page. Remember that the quality of your writing is important.
