The Institute of Medicine has stated a goal that 90% of practice be evidence-based by 2020. According to HealthyPeople.gov, the United States is currently at approximately 15%. Discuss two barriers that might hold nursing practice from achieving this goal and suggest ways in which identified barriers may be addressed.

Implementing evidence-based practice into daily clinical practice can result in safer and more cost-effective care to patients, but this is not always used. The most common barriers to implementing evidence-based practice is the lack of time and lack of knowledge (Unadkat, et al, 2021). One study found that 81% of the participants reported not having enough time to conduct research was a major barrier to implementing new information to the work environment (Sadoughi, et al., 2017). Currently there is a nursing shortage, which also means there is limited time to look up new information, set time aside for training, and implement the new practice. When new information is presented, adequate training must be provided prior to implementing this new evidence-based practice and there might not be training opportunities available. Additionally, heavy workload can contribute to lack of time to access evidence-based resources. Lack of knowledge include being unaware of evidence-based resources and how to access these resources. This lack of familiarity and evidence-based resources can cause discomfort from going beyond clinical routines, there might also be resistance to change their routine practice for there is limited knowledge on the new information (Unadkat, et al., 2021). Lack of knowledge can also include not thinking outside the box and not questioning current practices. Becoming so used to routine and the traditional way of addressing issues can backfire.
