7-20. Ian’s Place (The REA Model and E-R Diagrams)
Ian’s place sells pet supplies to dog and cat owners. To sell its products, the marketing department requires sales personnel to call on the pet store retailers within their assigned geographic territories. Salespeople have an application on their mobile phones that allows them to record sales orders and send these sales orders directly to the company network for updating the company’s sales order file.
Each day, warehouse personnel review the current sales orders in its file, and where possible, pick the goods and ready them for shipment. (Ian’s Place ships goods via common carrier, and shipping terms are generally FOB from the shipping point.) When the shipping department completes a shipment, it also notifies the billing department, which then prepares an invoice for the customer. Payment terms vary by customer, but most are “net 30.” When the billing department receives a payment, the billing clerk credits the customer’s account and records the cash received.

Other’s post:
The concept of ‘Think Profit’, NODs and CIAs are important to the employees’ work life balances. NODs are just the facts, just the numbers that might give information about specific departments whereas CIAs basically put a ‘face’ with these numbers. The Competitive Impact Areas are the plans behind these numbers. They are the procedure to achieve greatness after taking the logistics into consideration. These numbers relate to work-life balance. Work-life balance allows for employees to have a life outside of work, so that when they are at work, they are able to fully focus. Work-life balance, in theory, is supposed to encourage the separation of work and the individual’s personal life. This is important, because even though it seems like it wastes money by giving employees more time off, it rejuvenates the employee. It allows them to be happy, not overwhelmed. This will encourage employees to stay longer and be productive. Though the NODs might look less favorable because more paid time off is taken and presumably less hours are required. Productivity may be down, but this will also lower TOR and allow for more knowledgable and happier employees to work for the business. The CIAs are improved with work-life balance. Their benefit plans might include more which would attract more employees and entice employees to stay with that company longer.
If a company “thinks profit” they would be able to see the long term benefit of allowing their employees a work-life balance.
Attached below is an article that I used to help me understand more about the mentality of ‘think profit’ because it explained what a profit center is versus what a cost center is.
