Question 1:
Last week you explored various recruitment methods. For this discussion, you will be considering three candidates for the position of administrative assistant at your company. Prior to beginning work on this discussion, review the article What Are the Components of a Comprehensive Total Rewards & Motivation System? (Links to an external site.). Then, complete the Compensation and Benefits (Links to an external site.) activity. In this activity, you will make a selection from three candidate profiles and determine the compensation and benefits that will be offered to each of them.
Address the following in the discussion forum after you have completed the activity: Briefly state which candidate you selected. List the five benefits you selected to be included in this employee’s total rewards package. For each benefit you selected, explain why you selected it and how you believe it will impact organizational effectiveness and the employee (considering aspects like company size, organizational culture, budget, the position itself, as well as the employee).

Briefly state which candidate you selected.
For this week discussion I Chose Rachael. As the Job Description asked for 5 years of experience and a degree, she has had 18 years of corporate experience and has a high quality of work and has many certifications in business and computer software programs. Of the job description, responsibilities, and required skills and qualifications I felt she was the best fit for this Job. List the five benefits you selected to be included in this employee’s total rewards package.
Vacation and Sick time – I think away from work is very important. In some cases, it allows for people to take time for themselves and perhaps complete projects of things that they cannot normally take care of during a regular work week. This can be an asset to the employer as it allows for an employee to come to work with a clear and refreshed mind which keeps them engaged in their job. Also, it prevents people from becoming mentally fatigue in their position and is usually greatly appreciated by employees. As well a when you are ill can allow you time to recover with pay and not force you to have to come to work and take a risk of getting others ill.
Health Care – Health insurance is a big benefit to a company because it allows for the employees to be seen timely in order to get them back healthy as soon as possible which will make the company continue to operate effectively. At my place of employment, we have a added feature to our insurance through Teladoc and this saves you money by not having to see a physician and pay a copay as it is an added free service. According to Youssef, “health care benefits, can be an important factor in recruiting long-term employees (2015).”[Order Now]
Bonuses – Bonuses is something I really push for. By having these incentives, it makes employees focus on the quality and quantity of their job which is beneficial to the company. If there is a fair metric to decide who receives the bonus there will be more people working productively. My call center pays out millions of dollars annually and I can speak from experience it’s a big motivation to put more money in my pocket and help the company be successful.
Disability and Life Insurance – This option as a benefit is like Health Insurance. Disability and Life Insurance is a great benefit for both the employer and employee and their families since Rachael has small children it would cover the kids if anything would happen to where their mother would pass and if perhaps if injured and not able to work short term disability is a way to recover and get a percentage of wages during that time. As far as the business it ensures that they are giving the employee what they need to return to work when they are ready and show support to the deceased if that were the case.
401 K – By having retirement system, it keeps talent around the company for a longer time. If retirement is an option, you will have more people dedicated to performing daily and not pursuing other jobs. One of the benefits for the company is a tax advantage for the company. The downside for the company is the company may need some outside help in setting it up, and it could be time-consuming for the company to keep track of everything and cost more money to have those added services and outsources. For Rachael the benefit is that it supports her retirement savings and supports the employee.
The candidate I selected after completing the exercise was Rachael. Rachael is a highly experienced person with various abilities that looked like she could be a very good benefit to the company. I was actually stuck between Lucy and Rachael as though Lucy does not have the degree she did have the experience of years preferred. She was also labeled as a person who constantly exceeds expectations.
The five benefits that I have chosen for Rachael was health insurance, flexible work schedule, disability/life insurance, vacation/sick time, and bonuses.
The first benefit was the health insurance and I selected it because of Rachael’s age and family. A company that can offer its employee health insurance and to the family can potentially save a lot for Rachael. This would also make Rachael stay with the company and show how much the company takes care of her and her family. As Youssef (2015) stated, “Traditionally, health insurance has been an extremely desirable benefit…..because these benefits satisfy safety and security needs.” Safety is always a top concern especially once you get into the stage of having a family.
The second benefit is the flexible work schedule that should allow her to work and be flexible with her two kids. There are hectic schedules but as an administrative assistant as long as you can keep up and plan accordingly its a possibility to get a lot of stuff done at home or work. This will be able to help her achieve the balance between work and personal life.
The third benefit is a disability and life insurance perk. This is almost a passive benefit that provides a sense of security for the employee. It is better to have it than to not have it as nothing can be predicted with life. As far as budgeting goes for the company it’s not a major concern–it’s almost like blanket security to attract employees. Rachael’s job does not pose big risks like compared to working with heavy machinery or equipment that can be dangerous.
The fourth benefit is vacation/sick time benefit. This is a big morale boost for employees as people love to get paid when they are off and not have to have it as worry when it happens. As Youssef (2015) stated, “Work-life benefits can help employees deal with such conflits–reducing stress and burnout and enhancing productivity.” This means she is able to take some time off with her kids for vacation or back with other family and not have to worry about not getting paid.
The last benefit is bonuses. This was a hard decision between this retirement plan but as far as Rachael’s age–having bonuses might benefit her more than starting a retirement plan late in the game. Bonuses are great incentives for employees to reach their goals. The company can achieve more with better productivity and the way to get more productivity is to show your employee that if this is the goal and it meets it–a bonus incentive is offered. This is like the same with sales, if you sell more you make the company richer but if they all get paid the same….what is my incentive to try and be better when I can do one and get paid the same as everyone around.

Hello Class,
Discuss the training involved and how you can assess the effectiveness of the training
Training is essential to the employee becoming a better and more knowledgeable person than they were yesterday. The training can be seen as a positive aspect as the company is investing in the employee and intuitive about the future of the business. According to Youssef “Training creates value through investing in employees who add value to an organization and who constitute its intellectual capital” (2015). Training’s can equip the most highly qualified employees and candidates with abilities to enhance their KSAs. When trained right employees have a higher chance of staying with the organization and increase their chances for higher salaries, promotions, and job effectiveness.
Explain HR’s role in impacting the career development of employees.
HR counsels’ employee’s immediate supervisor on the importance of IDPs. Known as the plan for the individual, but HR sees the plan as a call of action when coaching the managers viewing the plan. According to Management Concepts “IDPs are part of the organization’s strategic plan, albeit indirectly, and contribute to addressing organizational needs” (2015). When the IDP of the employee has training and development as a goal. The HR will counsel the Manager on how to meet the needs of the employee. Part of the counseling given to managers are, mentoring, job shadowing, and cross examination assignments. With HR assisting the manager in the development of the employee the company will have a positive outlook and investment into the employee. When the employee IDP aligns with the organizational needs the chances for the employee to succeed become exceptional.
How have virtual training methods and technology impacted HR’s role in employee development
Virtual training and technology have changed the way HR interact with employee development. With online training or e-learning HR can conduct mass training’s with employees. Also, with online training being non face to face the training can be easily accessed anywhere, anytime, and with connection to the world wide web. “A special type of e-learning is virtual reality, which also gives trainees the opportunity to see and examine objects in a three-dimensional perspective.
According to ATD, young workers are more likely to prefer online training. Its many advantages include lower costs per trainee, flexibility, and access to a greater number of employees from a broader geographic area” (Youssef, 2015). Technology has provided HR with a way to mass train employees while also giving the employee the keys to be successful and flexibility to learn on the go. Although the training is virtual more employees have become receptive to virtual training since millennial’s are starting to make up a majority of the workforce.

My career goal is to become a Human Resource manager with a military healthcare facility. My first goal is to successfully complete my Human Resource Management degree and join the Virtual SHRM through Ashford which will help me in my career path of becoming an HRM. Virtual SHRM will offer me the following opportunities:
Experience the “real world” of human resources through interaction with HR professionals.
Network with alumni, students, industry professionals, and business leaders.
Participate in events to develop leadership skills and expand HR knowledge.
Access the Chapter’s group forum on LinkedIn to connect with members.
Receive notification of HR internships and entry-level HR jobs.
Attend educational webinars and networking events.
In my plan, I will get in touch with HR personnel in my current job, and see if I could shadow them, as well as to obtain information as to which training is available that I can take to further my path to becoming an HRM. I will adjust my U.S.gov account to allow the program to send me job notifications of available HR positions. This notification tool will allow me the opportunity to apply for available positions in the HR field so that I could gain the necessary skills to effectively perform the tasks of an HRM professional, once I attain my degree in HRM.
According to the article written by Management Concepts (2015) “HR’s role in the IDP process is both as the champion and as quality control. Their most important role is aligning individual development with the organization’s needs while balancing the employee’s interests and abilities” (para. 7). HRM is an effective way to improve organizational performance by focusing on the employee’s career needs. Organizational career development efforts for their workers increases loyalty and commitment to the organization, it also allows the company to place qualified personnel in the appropriate job positions. HR can identify the roles most likely to benefit from development in certain areas and help managers encourage their employees to include the appropriate developmental tasks on their plans.[Order Now]
As technology and software become more frequent in our lives, training priorities are shifting with new advances putting a greater demand on workers. To be a successful professional with today’s growing technologies in our lives and our work, training departments have had to adapt their training methods. Virtual training is a powerful, cost-effective, and flexible way to help workers learn and master the skills they need to excel in their jobs, to help organizational productivity.
The use of technology makes HR practices more efficient. In an organization with a high volume of employee’s technology allows the HR department to effectively contact employees, store files, and analyze employee performance. Good HR practices increase the benefits and decreases the problems. Effective use of technology improves HR practice, allowing the company to successfully achieve their productivity.
