Community Change

Write a two- to- three- page paper (excluding title and reference pages) that identifies a problem faced by your community. Discuss how a model of community change could be implemented to improve the problem.

• Describe six features of your community (e.g., cultural make up, size, and locality).
• Define the problem (e.g., obesity, environmental pollution, teenage pregnancy, graffiti, truancy, gangs, drugs, child labor, or insufficient educational programs) and explain why the problem is detrimental to the community.
• Select a model of community change identified in the textbook and explain how it could be implemented to improve the problem.
• Identify:
  • At least three aspects of the problem you think that the model will be most successful at solving and provide reasoning as to why.
  • At least three aspects of the problem you think that the model will struggle to solve and provide reasoning as to why.

• Papers must be in essay format (i.e., clear sentences and paragraphs, no bullet points, or excessive subheadings). You do not need to include an abstract.

• Cite your sources using APA formatting. For example, if you cite one of my papers, then you would use the following format (Marx, 2019) in the body of the paper. Then at the end of your paper you would cite the paper as: Marx, D. M. (2019). Fear of the known?: The effect of peer relevance and gender on women’s math performance under threat. Social Psychology of Education, 22, 1197-1214.

Paper2: Evaluating a Major Social Event. For this paper you are asked to analyze, from a social psychological perspective, a recent major social event (some examples are listed below) and how that event impacted society. In other words, you can explore how people are reacting to the event (e.g., fear leading to extreme behavior) or how other people’s behavior regarding the event are affecting others. For instance, using the persuasion chapter you could analyze how the messaging surrounding or during the event was effective or ineffective (e.g., whether people changed their behavior or opinions). Using the chapter on group influence you could analyze how the people around you or even those in virtual spaces influence your own actions regarding events (e.g., seeing others responding to the event influences your own behaviors or attitudes about the event). Using the stereotyping and prejudice chapter you could explore the motivations underlying the event or how stereotypes guided your judgments or opinion of those involved in the event. These are just a few of the ways to analyze how the particular social event has impacted society and people’s behaviors or attitudes. There are, of course, a multitude of other ways to analyze the impact of these social events, so feel free to choose any way that you see fit. Your grade will be based on how well you link social psychological to the event, NOT on whether you think the event was right or wrong or whether or not it fits with your political ideology. Any editorializing or personal opinions included in your paper may lead to a loss of points. Below are examples of 5 recent major social events, but feel free to choose another major social event if none of these events are of interest to you. You may check with me about the alternative event you chose in case you are uncertain about whether it is appropriate.
