Health-Care Policy Discussion stakeholder (stâk’hôl’dr), noun stakeholder (stâk’hôl’dr), noun stakeholder (stâk’hôl’dr), noun stake (Merriam-Webster, n.d.)
In a wager, someone who is entrusted with the stakes of the bettors.
One who has a stake or an interest in a project, a company, or a movement.
A person who is involved in or impacted by a certain course of action.
Stakeholders in health policy can be characterized in a variety of ways. Each of the descriptions offered above could be used to define the function of a stakeholder in healthcare policy, depending on your perspective.
Healthcare is a big financial worry for the public because it is one of the largest sectors of the US economy and one of the single largest line items in federal and state budgets. As government agencies, private sector, political organizations, think tanks, coalitions, and individuals battle with health policy challenges, the survival of many of the country’s most popular social programs, such as Medicare and Medicaid, as well as the health of millions, hangs in the balance. Each of these policy stakeholders brings their own agenda and interests to the table, therefore it’s critical to understand their roles and influences on healthcare policy.
You will assess the roles and interests of various healthcare policy players in this Discussion, and then discuss how each of them might affect healthcare policy.
