Choose FOUR of the following six questions and answer each in a couple short sentences. Please do not exceed four concise sentences (and please do not string out a sentence with tons of commas or run-ons)!
Explain why cities in Northern Italy became major cultural and economic centers of the Western World starting about the year 1300.
What were two major impacts of monasteries and cathedral schools upon society in the High Middle Ages?
Why do historians today generally remember Constantine as one of the most important Roman emperors?
What do you think were the two biggest impacts of the Crusades on European society and culture? Why?
Why did we spend so much time on Islam in a Western Civilization class? In other words, what were some major impacts upon “The West” by early Islam? Would you say Islam is “Western” or something else?
The conclusion of the 100 Years War was far more complex than “France won”. What major, long-lasting impacts did this war have upon France, England, and even the rest of Europe?
Section 3: Essay Question (35 points)
Choose ONE of the following two questions and answer to the best of your ability using course materials. There is no minimum or maximum answer length, but please constrain your answer to 4-5 short paragraphs (maybe 300-500 words). On the flipside, these questions cannot be effectively answered with just 50 words!
The time between the years 1050 and 1400 was extremely chaotic and full of death from our, yet European empires continued to grow technologically, culturally, and economically. Pick at least three crises from this time that we discussed in class or from the Brooks textbook. Analyze how these crises impacted Western society. Why did these crises not destroy the West? How did they change gender and/or gender roles? Did they change religious practice? Please expand on any of these questions a modern vantage point includes your own analysis!
The Middle Ages were a time when Christianity became the dominant religion throughout all of the European continent. Imagine you were a practicing Christian at various points between the years 300 and 1400. What are some ways in which Christian theology, practice, and tradition changed during these 1,100 years? What were some of the major events that changed Christianity? What types of Christian leaders might a regular peasant have interacted with at different points in time? Include how you, as a Christian during the late Roman Empire and/or Middle Ages, would have viewed other peoples’ religions (include specific other religions!)?
Section 4: Extra Credit (4 points)
If you *HAD* to live in one of the empires, kingdoms, caliphates, etc. that we have discussed in class, which would it be?
