Healthier Options on Campus Marketing Scenario Analysis
Thinking carefully about problems, questions, issues, outcomes in a marketing setting will help you design a research project that gets accurate, useful results that support the best business decisions.
It’s also important to consider the time frame and budget for your project, especially if you are seeking third-party support. We aren’t seeking the conclusion in advance, we are though, looking for possible outcomes of a potential decision (i.e., what if …..). Being open to discovering market information that you don’t anticipate can build a more accurate picture and will be more useful to your business.
The Scenario
Decide on a potential issue (i.e., Emotional Intelligence on Campus, recovering industries, Healthier options on campus) to write a research objective statement on.
A critical component of deciphering potential problems and beginning a research project is to gain a variety of perspectives about the issue. One way is to gather clues about it using tools such as Google Trends
Using Google Trends for market research (Links to an external site.) from Marketing Tips (Links to an external site.) by Brad Batesole (Links to an external site.)
Gathering the Ingredients
The next step is to discuss your ideas with colleagues to get additional perspectives. This helps us get into a more clear mind about the issue at hand as well as brainstorm additional methods. Take some time to discuss with your collaborators these potential questions…
Who is the systemic “owner” of this problem/issue? Who will it benefit (company, department, customers, society)?
Who is the systemic “decision-maker” of this problem/issue? Who is paying/requesting for this research to be done and will be making decisions on the outcome of this research?
What are the potential problems/issues effects on the potential participants?
Think about bias – whose problem is it really?
What will the cost of this outcome be?
Preparing the Recipe
After reviewing the lecture on Research Objective Statement, practice writing your own research objective statement process.
The ROS Recipe
After discussing your ideas, draft a research objective statement using the “recipe” above. (Follow the same sentence structure as the recipe).
Write a short description of your specific scenario and the ‘symptoms’ and/or ‘problems.’
Add justification of how you think each ingredient will support an answer to the issue.
Share 1,2,3 above in this Discussion post.
Add all your team’s names at the top of the post – however, All of you should still submit a copy on your own discussion post – to make sure you receive credit for it.
