Semester Self-Reflective Memo

When preparing your memo, please do not think that you must try to convince me that you or

your team were effective or be critical of your team members. Rather, your goal is to analyze

whether and how you met your semester goals, objectives and the events and behaviors that took

place during the preparation and delivery of the presentations (positive and negative). Explain

them, discuss why they occurred, and evaluate the outcome of these events and behaviors.

1. What did you learn?

Evaluate what you learned this semester in GSBA 542. Thinking about the assignments,

exercises, and topics covered. Consider the following: written messages, communication

styles, team communication, planning and delivering presentations, leadership

communication, slide design, persuasion, interviews, networking, EQ, and the use of the

SDI assessment to name a few of the objectives of the course.

2. Did you meet your goals?

Look back at your Communication Development Plan and your SMART goals and

respond to how you did or did not meet your goals. Be specific with examples of what

you did right and what you need to improve/change in the future to meet your goals.

Were your goals realistic?

3. How did your team communicate, and did your team meet their objectives?

Discuss your team’s communication processes beginning with the assignment of the

teams through the Presentation #4 delivery. Assess each team member’s (including your

own) participation and communication during meetings, preparation processes, and the

final presentation.

• Describe the section of the presentation each team member researched and prepared.
• Communicate the performance of your team members. Describe each person’s behavior

during the preparation and delivery processes. Provide specific examples to support each

assertion.

• Explain how each member of your team was engaged in the process. Explain how each

team member supported other members to strengthen team dynamics and improve the

team’s performance.

• Explain your behavior as a team member. Defend your behavior and discuss what you

did well and what you’d like to improve in future team experiences. Again, focus on

specific examples to support your assertions.

• Evaluate the performance of your team. Discuss how well your team met its objectives.

Was there any conflict? If so, how was it resolved? What did you learn from the conflict?

Were there significant time management issues? If so, how were they resolved?

Length: Most memoranda, single-spaced and effectively formatted, will be about two to three

pages (approximately 1200 words). The final exam memo will not be graded on how effective

you or your team were; rather, it will be judged on how effectively you evaluate and

communicate your growth and the process through-out the semester.

• Paragraphs should be flush left/ragged right
• Margins should be 1”
• Single spaced paragraphs, double spaced between paragraphs (this document is

12-point font, single spaced with double spaces between paragraphs)
