Project: T-shirts
Why are we doing this activity? We can see evidence of the global interconnectivity in the products we consume every day. Many are manufactured through supply chains that span multiple countries. The purpose of this “hands on” activity is to understand where one type of consumable product is manufactured and disposed. You will collect your own data on where t-shirts are produced and how people dispose of their shirts. You will then conduct a basic analysis of this data and write a report summarizing your findings.
PART 1a: T-shirt Production Background Research and Data Collection
[Order Now]
In Part 1a of this project, you will review provided resources to provide context to your research. Then you will collect, compile, and organize data about where t-shirts are manufactured.
1) Watch “Planet Money Makes a T-Shirt”. There are five chapters and it will take about 30 minutes. Use the map below or preferably this link (https://geology.com/world/world-map.shtml) follow a potential t-shirt as it moves through the process of being made.
2) Collect data on where t-shirts are made. Do this by checking the labels on 25 t-shirts. You can use your t-shirts from your own closet, those of your friends and family, a thrift store, of take samples from multiple stores at the mall.
3) Organize and analyze your data including:
- a table with the absolute number of t-shirts manufactured in each country,
- a graph (bar or pie chart) visually representing data— showing how many shirts were manufactured in what countries
- a map (world map) showing the location of manufacturers— use MapChart (https://mapchart.net/), excel, or any website or software of your choice. Your map must be titled and have a legend.

4) Following your background research, data collection, and analysis, you should be able to answer the following questions:
- a) What is the top manufacturing country according to your research?
- b) In addition to the specific country, are other geographic patterns evident?
- c) Why do you think that this is the case?
- d) How do these findings relate to your background research and any other resources you used?
PART 1b: T-shirt Disposal Background Research and Data Collection
In Part 1b of this project, you will review provided resources to provide context to your research. Then you will collect, compile, and organize data about how people dispose of their old t-shirts.
1) Read these 2 short articles on elearn: “How the US and Rwanda have fallen out over second hand clothing” and “Haiti Doesn’t Need Your Old T-shirts”.
2) Survey at least 10 students/friends and ask the following question:
- How do you dispose of t-shirts that they no longer wear?
- If the interviewee responds that they give their t-shirts to a charity (ex. Salvation Army, Goodwill) or other response, ask— if they know where those t-shirts end up?
- Design a graph (bar or pie chart) of where t-shirts are disposed; and where students/friends think the shirts end up.
3) Following your background research, data collection, and analysis, you should be able to answer the following questions:
- a) What are the different ways in which people (based on your sample) dispose of old t-shirts?
- b) How do the majority of those sampled dispose of old t-shirts?
- c) Of those who donate t-shirts, how aware are they of where they end up?
- d) How do these findings relate to your background research and any other resources you used?
Part 1a and 1b Dropbox Submission – T-shirt Production Raw Data Submission
- Preferably using excel, submit a table listing the different countries and number of t-shirts you found manufactured in each country
- Submit a table listing how people dispose of their t-shirts
- I will compile this data so we can have a larger sample size with which you can compare your results.
- You do not need to provide answers to the questions above, but you should be thinking about these questions as you compile data so you can answer them in Part 2: Final Report.
