Self-Reflection
What are some of your personal beliefs, values, thoughts, and feelings about mental illness? Reflect on what has influenced and shaped your beliefs, values, and reactions.
Mental health literacy has continued to become a major concern in the current world as majority of people gain insight and knowledge concerning the effect of the condition to a larger population. Mental health issues and the appropriate remedies has forced individuals to develop personal beliefs, values, and feelings towards the condition. The ability of an individual to read about mental illness and interact with individuals that have dealt directly with the sickness continue to provide the beliefs towards the illness. Personally, the ability to interact with friends and family members that have endured mental illness has made me to gain more information concerning the condition. Although the cultural stereotyping and reading more concerning mental illness might provide an individual with insights concerning the disease, living with an individual that has endured the illness will further change the perception (Choudhry et al. 2016). The ability to experience the mental health illness from a closer loved one changed my values, feelings, thoughts, and personal belief when it comes to mental health related sickness.
How has exposure to mental health stigma influenced and shaped your beliefs, values, thoughts, and feelings to mental illness?
Mental health stigma is one of the main hindrances for individuals suffering from the disease attaining better healthcare and treatment for the condition. The society and cultural stereotyping have made it almost impossible for individuals in the society to seek for medical treatment and help in the public. The fear from the ridicule and prejudice from the society makes it almost impossible for individuals to identify as having mental health related illness (Choudhry et al. 2016). Personally, stigmatization of mental health illness has changed my perception towards individual suffering from the disease after I discovered that a close member of the family was suffering from the illness. Initially, I did not care much about mental health related patients and viewed them and weaker humans because of the lack of ability to provide better for the society. Over the past few years, my feelings, attitude, and values concerning mental stigmatization has changed as I try as much as possible to listen and understand individuals suffering from the illness. Consequently, I encourage individuals that I meet and open up to having mental illness related issues to visit therapists and counselling experts to receive better treatment for the condition.
As you move forward in your social work training, what can you do to address some of the negative beliefs, values, thoughts, and feelings you may have?
The social work training has played an important role in ensuring that I understand better individuals suffering from mental health related illness. Through the social training, I have learned to have patience and listen better to other members of the society. Moving forward, I would increase the interactions with individuals that have experienced mental illness on a face-to-face level to better understand the condition. Interacting and exchanging past experiences with patients that have recovered fully from the illness will assist in having better thoughts, feelings and beliefs concerning mental health illness. Consequently, I will continue to read more books, journals and watch documentaries on mental health related cases in the past few years and the best interventions utilized around the world to help patients to recover fully (Choudhry et al. 2016). Gaining more information accurate information concerning the mental health illness is the best ways to eradicate the negative beliefs and thoughts concerning mental health illness.
