The importance of cafeteria in any learning institution cannot be overemphasized since it is the place that most people frequently visit when they feel like eating something. However, for such cafeterias to achieve their primary goals, which is to provide quality and safe food products to their customers, high standards of hygiene must be maintained at all times.
The concept of hygiene dates back to the prehistoric periods, for instance, the Mosaic Law in both the Quran and the Old Testament focus on the idea of personal hygiene. Hygiene is the primary determinant of individual health, as lack of proper hygiene may promote the development of many forms of bacteria and other pathogens (Takalkar & Kumavat, 2011)
. The idea of hygiene begins right from where the food is grown, processed, cooked, and served. If any of the above stages do not stick to the hygiene standards stipulated by the ministry of health, the health of the students on campus is at stake.
Hence, the management of ASU cafeteria must ensure that it serves quality and healthy foods and also maintain the expected maximum hygiene standards to prevent food-related illnesses, enhance the safety of the students, and make the cafeteria more inviting.
There is no doubt that low standards of cleanliness in ay cafeteria increases the chances of students contacting various illnesses related to food poisoning. The promotion of proper hygiene in the ASU cafeteria will help in curbing some diseases like cholera, which are brought by low hygiene.
When the learners visit the cafeteria, they do so trustingly that they can get a high-quality meal, which is well prepared. However, this may not be the case in the ASU cafeteria, following the fact that some of the standards established to ensure maximum hygiene is achieved are not followed.
Hygiene will likewise promote the quality of life among the learners since they will be free from several diseases, which are attributed to poor hygiene (Clement, 2018).
Poor hygiene standards in any food outlet often translate into the illness of the students. When this happens, some parents always end up suing the learning institution for failing to act responsibly to maintain the safety of their children. However, by maintaining maximum hygiene standards, cases of illnesses amongst students will drop, which consequently translates into fewer legal suits against the school. Therefore, by ASU cafeteria maintaining maximum hygiene standards, the university at large will prevent future litigations, which may come up due to poor health in the cafeteria.
For instance, a student may get sick because of eating from the cafeteria; this may be blamed on the university. To avoid such issues in the future, there is a need for ensuring hygiene at various levels in the cafeteria.
By avoiding such legal suits, the university will be spared of the unnecessary financial burden as the funds that could be used in these legal suits will be channeled to other important projects.
By maintaining maximum hygiene standards, the cafeteria will always stay clean and attractive. This will make more students visit it because they will be sure of eating clean food. The management of the cafeteria will also feel obliged to offer a variety of foods because of the fact that more and more students will now be demanding its meals.
A concern has been raised that the learners in ASU have access to a limited variety of meals from the cafeteria; this poses a higher risk as the learners are forced to look for meals elsewhere at a high price.
Besides, some of the options available for the students from outside the university may not meet the set health standards. Finally, this will ensure that learners have access to a wide variety of meals that meet their nutritional needs.
The most critical consideration that needs an immediate course of action is the food quality. The quality of food sold in the ASU cafeteria begins form how it is grown to how it is served. For this reason, the cafeteria should obtain their food from the reputable supplier, and ensure that the preparation and serving process uphold the hygiene (Clement, 2018).
Therefore, by maintaining proper hygiene at the ASU cafeteria, it will be possible to provide the learners with high-quality food that is free from contamination.
The adoption of the best practices when handling food in the cafeteria will promote the quality of food and reduce the health risks associated with food. Besides, the management of the cafeteria will avoid unnecessary lawsuits, which may ruin their reputation and business.
The place will also become more attractive as many students will end up buying their meals from the cafeteria, thus translating into increased revenue for the management and the university. In conclusion, the ASU cafeteria needs to confirm its status as a center for high-quality food that is free from any contamination and safe for the students’ consumption by maintaining maximum hygiene standards at all times.
