- Primary waves & Secondary waves: Primary waves also known as P-waves or compressional waves, P-waves produce alternate stretching and compression in the material they pass through. P-waves can travel through both solid and liquid portions of the Earth’s interior. Secondary waves also known as S-waves or shear waves, S-waves shake rocky material from side to side or up and down as they pass. Unlike P-waves, they cannot pass through liquids, S-waves only though solid parts.
