The final project is the development of an MT Engage e-Portfolio presentation.
This is a revision and integration of some of the previous assignments, along with three new parts. The presentation that you create for this class can be used in your sophomore-level MT Engage ePortfolio if you choose to be an MT Engage scholar.
Your ePortfolio should include:
A 1-2 page Personal Statement (including your interests, goals, and career objectives) [NEW]. This section should be based on the relevant assignments from this semester (especially #2 and #3). Use the previous assignments as guides when you write your Personal Statement. You should not simply include the same assignment you already submitted.
Your Career Plan (with timeline) [NEW] — Your career plan should include subgoals and larger goals with a step-by-step plan for achieving each of them. Integrate a timeline into the plan – that is, indicate when you will be doing each of these things. Your Career Plan should be written in narrative (paragraph) form, as if the reader has no idea who you are and what your goals are. You should be able to draw on some of the information from Assignment #3 to complete this part of the assignment. The typical plan might be 1-2 pages. You should not simply include the same assignment you already submitted.
Be sure to include:
degree(s) to be earned
major
minor(s)
elective courses
grades/GPA (desired GPA and how you will attain it)
skill development (e.g., computer, communication)
other training/development
clubs/professional associations
research activities
internships/job shadowing/volunteer work
extracurricular activities
job search and/or grad school preparation activities
job search and/or grad school preparation strategies
For those of you who are still uncertain about a lot of things, your career plan should include opportunities to develop fundamental knowledge and skills (e.g., core courses, computer skills, research) and opportunities to explore potential areas of interest (e.g., specialized courses, internships, volunteer work).
Your Current Resume (a revised and updated Assignment #4 if I provided you with feedback.)
A short, 1-page, Cover Letter addressed to a prospective employer/graduate school/internship site/etc. [NEW] The cover letter should include the following: (a) an explanation of why you are writing and why are interested in the position and (b) how you can contribute to the organization or program you are applying to (e.g., what are you bringing to the table). Use the MTSU Career Development Center’s guide for writing a cover letter (https://www.mtsu.edu/career/documents/CoverLetterGuide.pdf).
Develop your ePortfolio in terms of your current resume. Instructions for creating an ePortfolio using D2L can be found in a separate document. Do not wait until the day this assignment is due to try to figure out how to create an ePortfolio on D2L. There is also a peer tutor in the library who can assist with your ePortfolio. More information about the MT Engage ePortfolio can be found at www.mtsu.edu/mtengage.
The final product should be internally consistent and coherent. That is, your resume should accurately reflect your personal statement, and your cover letter should accurately reflect all your other materials. Your ePortfolio should be organized as follows: personal statement, career plan, resume, and cover letter.
Be sure to keep a copy of the materials you are submitting to your ePortfolio for yourself (both paper and electronically). If you would like additional feedback from me on your ePortfolio presentation, e-mail me. I will be happy to help you. Also, whenever you meet with your academic advisor(s) or mentor(s), be sure to show them your ePortfolio presentation and get feedback on it from them.
