The CDC has recommended all Americans wear homemade masks covering their faces in public to help stem the spread of the coronavirus. As reported in a CNN article on April 7, concerns have been raised that “going out in public wearing homemade masks can be read as being criminal or nefarious, particularly when applied to black men.”

COVID-19 Discussion
Do you think homemade masks could exacerbate racial profiling, placing blacks and Latinos in danger? Not necessarily; despite my understanding of the sentiment behind that train of thought, I have yet to see any data that confirms it in the social context of COVID-19.
What issues in our society have led to the fear of racial profiling from wearing homemade masks? Issues such as the disproportionately large amount of crimes committed by and arrests of minority populations could contribute to a fear like the one posed by the question.
What role has media played in perpetuating such fears? Stories about negative impacts on minority communities generally get a lot of clicks, so the media spends much more time writing and producing stories that will make money for their networks instead of ensuring that their coverage is as accurate as can be.
CDC’s mask guidelines has been called “an example of heterogeneous effects” — explain why? The effect means that not all people that adhere to the guideline will be affected equally.
In your opinion, what role can media play in alleviating these fears, particularly during this time of crisis? The media could reduce the amount of speculation that clutters the news cycle and instead focus on accurately reporting facts and numbers provided by the experts.

Do you think homemade masks could exacerbate racial profiling, placing blacks and Latinos in danger?
Yes i do think homemade mask could exacerbate racial profiling because there are some people out there who are really paying attention to detail. It is usually somoene in a gang or someone who isn’t up to any good.
What issues in our society have led to the fear of racial profiling from wearing homemade masks?
All the gangs and violence going on has led to the fear of it.
What role has media played in perpetuating such fears?
I have not seen anything first hand about the media and people fearing of others wearing face masks. Television could play a huge role in like the color of bandannas and people being afraid.
CDC’s mask guidelines has been called “an example of heterogeneous effects” — explain why?
People are getting looked at the wrong way because of all these face mask guidelines. Some people shouldn’t fear wearing a mask just because they are black. Everyone should be looked at the same when wearing any kind of mask.
In your opinion, what role can media play in alleviating these fears, particularly during this time of crisis?
They could show everyone that it is the best route possible to stop the spread of the corona. No one should be looked at different just because of a mask they have on. Its the only way to stop the spread of corona.
