Essay #1 Assignment Sheet: Research Paper
(Metaphor)
LAB DATE (Mark Your Calendar): Monday 09/18.
STEP ONE: All Research (Due Thursday 09/25):
On this date you must turn in hard copies of the following:
1) First two pages of each source or article you are using in your essay
2) A correctly formatted Works Cited page listing all sources to be used in your essay, INCLUDING your story from The Seagull Reader.
3) A list of quotations to be used from these sources in the body of your essay, including correctly formatted and cited documentation.
The consequences are severe: Failure to hand in these materials ON TIME on the due date listed above will cause two things to happen:
Required Research
This mini-research paper requires a minimum of TWO (2) outside sources, in addition to quotes from the story you choose to write about. These sources MUST INCLUDE AT LEAST ONE (1) SOURCE from an online database such as EBSCO, JSTOR, etc. It is also required that each article or book have an author’s name attached to them, so general quotes from websites such as Wikipedia are not eligible. To be absolutely clear, the following sources ARE NOT permitted for this assignment: .coms, .edus, .nets. orgs. or any general website. Again, your sources must be academic level, either from a database like EBSCO or from a credible book.
IMPORTANT: Essays containing less than two academic sources on the due date will be returned to the student unread by the instructor. Likewise, papers without a Works Cited page or in-text citations will receive the same treatment.
This is a research paper. Treat is as such. When in doubt about a source, check it out with your instructor or an AVC research librarian or the Writing Center. Using sources without citation is plagiarism. Plagiarized papers will receive a ZERO. And DON’T PROCRASTINATE.
STEP TWO: Complete Rough Draft (Due 10/02): Assuming you hand in your research on time and it is approved by the instructor, your completed rough draft, including all the citations etc. from STEP ONE, is due one week later, on 10/02. Again, consequences are severe if this is not completed by the due date.
Assignment
What is a Metaphor? It is one of the building blocks of literature, full of mystery and delight. We see it everywhere―in songs, poems, love letters, and in all the holy books of the various religions.
In an essay of 3-4 pages (1000 words, minimum), explore the sources of metaphor. Begin your paper by providing your reader with a working definition of the term metaphor IN YOUR OWN WORDS. Then, using one story The Seagull Reader, locate two or three major metaphors within the story and write an analytical essay explaining how they work to add meaning and emotion to the story. Use EXACT QUOTES from the stories to illustrate and support your points. Your thesis and paper should address the following question:
WHY ARE METAPHORS IMPORTANT &
HOW DO THEY ENHANCE A SHORT STORY?
All my papers require a word count in the upper left hand header. It should look something like this:
