ENC 1101 Economic Injustice of Plastics Project
The coming age of ecological medicine article and the economic injustice of plastic ted talk
How have environmental health issues influenced our daily health? Environmental and health issues have been major concerns in the global world, and waste disposal has been a potential threat to human health.
In “the economic injustice of plastic” ted talk, tv spokesperson van jones talks of waste disposal as the key component that contributes to the contemporary problems experienced by human beings. In “the coming age of ecological medicine” article, writer and environmentalist kenny ausubel also inform readers about how the environmental issues affect human health. Their concerns are influenced by the increased environmental pollution issues and the diseases found in human communities
. *rephrase this for the conclusion* => ultimately, ausubel and jones agree that environmental issues are a factor in healthy living. Jones and ausubel make it clear that person’s level of health is dependent on the environment. *this is the difference between claims* => however, while jones’ believes that ___________, ausubel believes that______________. I agree with jones’ assertions regarding how plastic waste creates environmental injustices, but i feel that he fails to provide a guidance and data regarding the best way to manage plastic disposables.
On other hand, ausubel provides ideas on how improving the environment is a factor in promoting good health. Ausubel’s point of argument is convincing as it is clear that most environmental pollution issues results in diseases and illnesses. Although they approach this issue from different contacts, their message for readers is clear. (tell what message is in conclusion.)
In “the economic injustice of plastic” ted talk article, van jones focuses on different issues relating to waste disposal in our environment. In his talk, jones gives explanations about how the disposal of plastic wastes in the earth’s environment results in environmental pollution and also affect the entire ecosystem.
The speaker in this talk can be viewed as a supporter of green energy utilization, and he focuses on how disposable materials impact the environment and living organisms, with an emphasis on human beings who are living in lower socioeconomic societies. In jones’ discussion, he discusses how waste disposal issues has been given more attention in big cities, even while some communities neglect the health issues of the poor who are living in regions such as cancer alley.
According to jones, the green energy movement is passionate about having no disposable materials and waste in california while it accepts the existence of disposables in societies and communities residing in the cancer alley region (jones 11:01). It is understood that the pollution from plastic waste can be traced from the production process, usage and elimination of plastic waste. In jones’ view, the poor are mostly affected by this problem.
Jones’ talk effectively provides an insight on how plastic pollution creates social injustices to society though the negative impacts of pollution. Jones also effectively shows how the poor handling of disposable plastic material can result in environmental harm. The recycling and burning of plastic disposables results in production of the greenhouse gasses that pollute the atmospheric air; this is the main point of concern for jones.
However, despite his insightful ideas, jones does not educate viewers about the specific strategies that they need to employ in handling plastic wastes, saying only that quote to prove this paragraph (time). He focuses mostly on plastic disposables and the impacts they create in our environment. In this context, jones’ should focus on the idea of maintaining a healthy environment by ensuring that plastic wastes are disposed of correctly.
Conversely, in the “coming age of ecological medicine” article, ausubel focuses a great deal of attention on environmental health improvement for the purpose of a better and healthier future society. The author states the importance of managing the environment. The writer also emphasizes the idea of environmental preservation as a contributing aspect to the community and to public health. In his view, people should therefore avoid habits that are harmful to the environment.
Ausubel claims that ecological medicine is helpful for the advancement of public health through sustainable environmental improvements (para. 10). A critical concern of the author is focused on how human life is linked with the environment; he therefore advises people to conduct themselves in useful ways that ensure a safe environment for the purpose of safety and healthy living.
furthermore, the writer argues that industrial pollution needs to be dealt with, as this type of pollution is the key contributor to global warming and climate change health. Finally, the writer believes that medical practitioners also need to follow good waste disposal practices to avoid environmental pollution issues.
Ausubel is correct when he says health problems are results of poor environmental management. When the environment is poorly managed, diseases and illness can easily emerge. For example, diseases such as malaria can emerge in places where the drainage and disposal of waste products is poor. Quote to prove this paragraph (time). Therefore, managing a sustainable environment can help in fighting health problems that are influenced by environmental pollution factors.
Both authors show how poor environmental conditions are linked to poor health. Both ausubel and van jones agree that the health of the ecological system has deteriorated due to human activities such as poor waste disposal and deforestation. Such human activities are a threat to the environment and to the health of the people within their surroundings.
Such concerns have necessitated an urgent change in human activities and behavior related to their interaction with the environment. In this context, it is clearly evident that diseases such as some cancers are a result of environmental pollution issues. (need to prove who said this) -> deforestation has also led to environmental issues such global warming. Global warming has led to increased temperatures affecting activities such as agriculture.
Reduced agricultural production can result in food shortages to the community leading to poverty. Human activities that lead to environmental pollution and environmental destructions have shown negative impact to the society leading to harmful effects. (difference in thesis, jones said this, and ausubel said this)
Both the article and the ted talk insist that careless waste disposal have negative impacts on the environment and poor handling of the wastes in one region has a devastating impact on other regions. Ausubel states how the environment determines the health of the people. Poor management of environment affects the health of the people.
The major concern on the environment should therefore focus of improving the environment as a way to improve the health of the society. Finally, both writers agree that the responsibility of proper handling and disposal of waste lies with every responsible person. Therefore, people should take care of their immediate environment and ensure that ecological and manmade wastes are properly disposed.
Write another paragraph that summarizes everything. Refer to underline portion of introduction paragraph.
