ESSAY TOPIC: I would like you to write about “nontraditional” deviance. What is “nontraditional deviance?” I want you to think outside of the box. This type of deviance may be a behavior or a subculture and may be legal or illegal, but I would like it to be something outside of the standard homicide/theft/sexual assault box (after all, your second paper is about a serial killer). Essay topics must be approved by mebefore you begin. Please note that I am likely to limit repeat topics, so if you feel strongly about something, contact me sooner than later to secure it.
ESSAY INSTRUCTIONS In the introduction to your paper, please explain why you believe the topic is important and worth further investigation. The paper should also include a conclusion which summarizes your argument and offers any additional commentary.
When writing your paper consider the following questions relating to the sociology of deviance:
Please note that Questions 1-4 should help you focus your essay to ensure that you cover all of the relevant areas. However the primary task of this paper is to apply one or more of the conceptualizations/theoretical perspectives (see question 5) on deviance (as discussed in class lectures and in your textbook) to your essay topic.
1) Describe the behavior and why the behavior is considered deviant. (This might appear more obvious in some cases than in others and should include Adler & Adler’s ABC’s and 3 S’s).
2) How do these deviants view their own behavior? For example, do they regard their deviance as a one-time aberration or see it as a deviant career? Justify your answer.
3) In your view, what impacts (both positive and negative) does the deviant behavior have on society?
4) In what ways has society responded or reacted to the deviance?
5) Provide a brief analysis of the deviant behavior from the perspective of TWO OR MORE of the sociological theories on deviance set out in the text and discussed in lectures, up to this point. One of these perspectives must be the ideas of Goffman, in some capacity. Another must be one of the conceptualization of deviance ideas (Normative/Positivist, Social Constructionist/Relativist, Critical).
Remember Question #5 above is the most important as you must apply two or more theoretical perspectives to the topic you have chosen. Your comparison should involve explanations associated with different categories of theory and not two theories selected from within the same category—in other words, you can talk about Goffman’s ideas on stigma and align them with the ideas of Social Constructionist/Relativist conceptualizations of deviance, but (because they are very much interactionist ideas) that is only one theoretical perspective.
You would still want to discuss another conceptualization of deviance or theory (by the time this is due, we will have gone through Strain Theory and Labeling Theory, so either of those would be acceptable, as well, so long as they are utilized to illustrate a different conceptualization of deviance), rather than using a different idea from Goffman or Labeling Theory to make the same case about the social construction of deviance. Instead, maybe Labeling theory is used to illustrate a Normative or Critical Conception of Deviance.
Because I understand this may be confusing, especially to someone new to Sociology, the rule of thumb is: first, take care to not be redundant—this is not a paper only about Goffman or only about one way of seeing deviant behavior. Second, ask if you are on the right track before you get too far in, if you are not sure.
It is essential that you use empirical sources (books, journal articles, etc.) to support your thesis. In other words, what do the key academic scholars in the area have to say about the topic? To what extent do they agree? If there is no academic research directly related to what you are examining, this is an opportune time to make your case for its relevance and importance.
If you have difficulty choosing a topic or organizing your essay please discuss this with me well in advance of the due date. It may help if you think of victimless crimes, stigmatized identities or group behaviors that are perceived as deviant—we have discussed several of these in class.

Literature Support
91-84 points The context and relevance of the issue, as well as a clear description of the study aim, are presented. The history of searches is discussed. |
Methodology
58-53 points With titles for each slide as well as bulleted sections to group relevant information as required, the content is well-organized. Excellent use of typeface, color, images, effects, and so on to improve readability and presenting content. The minimum length criterion of 10 slides/pages is reached. |

40-38 points
More depth/information is required for the context and importance, otherwise the study detail will be unclear. There is no search history information supplied. |
83-76 points
There is a review of important theoretical literature, however there is limited integration of research into problem-related ideas. The review is just partly focused and arranged. There is research that both supports and opposes. A summary of the material given is provided. The conclusion may or may not include a biblical integration. |
52-49 points
The content is somewhat ordered, but there is no discernible organization. The use of typeface, color, graphics, effects, and so on may sometimes distract from the presenting substance. It is possible that the length criteria will not be reached. |
Poor Quality
0-45% |
37-1 points
The context and/or importance are lacking. There is no search history information supplied. |
75-1 points
There has been an examination of relevant theoretical literature, but still no research concerning problem-related concepts has been synthesized. The review is just somewhat focused and organized. The provided overview of content does not include any supporting or opposing research. The conclusion has no scriptural references. |
48-1 points
There is no logical or apparent organizational structure. There is no discernible logical sequence. The use of typeface, color, graphics, effects, and so on often detracts from the presenting substance. It is possible that the length criteria will not be reached. |
