Drama and Performance The Staging Paper
For your first essay, you will use the techniques of close reading to explore the interplay
of written text and performed text in one specific section of As You Like It. Mr. DeJoseph
and I will let you know which performances, and which moments from these
performances are available for you to use in this paper, and I will make sure that you
have access to all possible clips.
As we have discussed in class, every production of a play makes certain choices about
what matters in the play, as a whole. This overall interpretation comes out of the text, but
it also emerges from the many things that are left open in the text. Written plays contain
gaps or moments of ambiguity in which actors or directors are left with choices as to
what matters in terms of the play and its meaning. Actors and directors have to make
decisions about the ways they will play this scene and their decisions shape how
audiences see the play as a whole.
Not only does a performance make choices about the many textual gaps left by the
written play, performances also choose what to retain from the written text. For instance,
a certain performance may edit a particular scene – removing lines, moving them, or
assigning them to another character in order to focus on what seems to be “most
important” or to emphasize a relationship or thread of meaning. Each of these choices
pushes the audience to understand the action of the scene in particular ways.
Performances also shape interpretation through the choices they make in costumes,
setting, lighting, sound, movement, or proximity of characters. Actors’ voice inflections,
attitude towards the audience, and gestures, are yet another means of establishing
meaning.
In this paper, you should develop an argument which identifies the possibilities in a
written textual moment or moments and then consider the implications and meanings that
arise out of the play-in-performance. One way to go about this would be to look for those
places in the text in which the lines themselves present a problem of interpretation. If you
can identify moments such as these, you are in a good position to consider the
implications of a performance’s choices in regards to both this moment and the play as a
whole.
This is a fairly short paper, so you need to focus. Do not try and take on the whole of a
scene, or the whole of a production clip. Instead, turn your readers’ attention to one or
two key moments or to certain elements. This will allow you to really support your thesis
with evidence from both the written text and the play-in-performance. Read your
selected text and watch your chosen performance over and over to create a strong
argument.
In order to succeed at this paper, you need to have a clear thesis. Every paragraph of your
essay should help you support this thesis through argument and appropriate evidence
from the written and performed play. Get to know your play – read and reread it.

Methodology
58-53 points With titles for each slide as well as bulleted sections to group relevant information as required, the content is well-organized. Excellent use of typeface, color, images, effects, and so on to improve readability and presenting content. The minimum length criterion of 10 slides/pages is reached. |

40-38 points
More depth/information is required for the context and importance, otherwise the study detail will be unclear. There is no search history information supplied. |
83-76 points
There is a review of important theoretical literature, however there is limited integration of research into problem-related ideas. The review is just partly focused and arranged. There is research that both supports and opposes. A summary of the material given is provided. The conclusion may or may not include a biblical integration. |
52-49 points
The content is somewhat ordered, but there is no discernible organization. The use of typeface, color, graphics, effects, and so on may sometimes distract from the presenting substance. It is possible that the length criteria will not be reached. |
Poor Quality
0-45% |
37-1 points
The context and/or importance are lacking. There is no search history information supplied. |
75-1 points
There has been an examination of relevant theoretical literature, but still no research concerning problem-related concepts has been synthesized. The review is just somewhat focused and organized. The provided overview of content does not include any supporting or opposing research. The conclusion has no scriptural references. |
48-1 points
There is no logical or apparent organizational structure. There is no discernible logical sequence. The use of typeface, color, graphics, effects, and so on often detracts from the presenting substance. It is possible that the length criteria will not be reached. |
