Peer 1: I chose this resource because when my mother was in the hospital after a brain tumor operation, she was frequently visited by a therapy dog to keep her in good spirits. One thing I didn’t realize about therapy dogs is that they can be used during funerals. According to the website “A gentle Therapy Dog can be a help during this time, despite the fact that it might be a very melancholy occasion. They deliver unconditional love and help to brighten a gloomy environment while also bringing calm to folks through a difficult moment ” (Therapy Dogs International, 2008). The thought of having a therapy dog at a funeral is a fantastic one. As someone who struggles with coming to funerals for loved ones, I believe having a therapy dog on hand would make me feel much more at ease.
Knowing that this type of service is available outside of hospitals or that someone can register their own personal pet as a service dog is important to me. Knowing that if someone I know ever requires the services of a service/therapy dog, there is a firm that can help. Knowing that the humans and animals involved in this program are simply decent samaritans who wish to aid others with a companion that offers them joy. It is a wonderful and honorable act to share that unconditional love with complete strangers.
Peer 2: Emotional Health After a Disaster or Traumatic Event
I chose this website because I believe that emotional and mental health is very essential topics that deserve more attention. Given that we’ve been living through a pandemic for the past year and a half, I believe it’s taken an emotional and psychological toll on all of us in different ways. It’s natural to feel anxious, stressed, or depressed, and it’s critical to accept these emotions. “Caring for your emotional health during an emergency can help you think clearly and react to the immediate needs to protect yourself and your family,” according to the essay (CDC, 2019). I want everyone to know that paying attention to your mental health not only gives you a clear mind, but it also helps you deal with future difficult events in the long run. The most significant influence this material had on me was becoming more aware of frequent indications of anxiety and learning which coping skills are most effective when dealing with a crisis.
