Alexander: There are many different types of coronaviruses. SARS-CoV-2 or COVID-19 is the most recent example of a widespread virus. Other types of coronaviruses are MERS-CoV also known as MERS, and SARS-CoV also known as SARS. A coronavirus is spread through droplets and virus particles released into the air when someone breathes. In large gatherings, these droplets can spread very easily causing the virus to spread. The term corona means crown. They call it this because the viruses outer layers are covered with spike proteins that surround them like a crown. Coronaviruses are known to affect the respiratory system. The first major outbreak of a coronavirus was SARS. However, SARS does not spread as fast as SARS-CoV-2. Besides there being different forms of coronaviruses, there are also different variants of the virus. That’s one of the key things that is new about coronaviruses today. For example, the coronavirus that caused SARS-CoV-2 can mutate. A mutation could mean the virus will start to spread quicker and people could get more sick. As more people get sick, it increases the chances for the virus the mutate. This also makes it harder to keep up with vaccines. When a vaccine is released before a mutation of the virus occurs, it isn’t guaranteed that the vaccine will be as effective towards the new variants. I think it’s important to understand how the virus spreads and how to prevent it from spreading. This might influence someone decision in changing their lifestyle habits or possibly getting vaccinated. Hannah: There are updated booster shots that protect against the original virus and the omicron virus. It’s called bivalent booster. There are people who can have long COVID-19, which is when people experience long term effects from the infection. Researchers have found that people who have had COVID-19 can potentially develop restrictive lung disease. This is when there is a lack of air that the lungs can handle. There has been research where COVID-19 can be associated with an increased risk for blood clots. Blood clots can cause a lot of chronic lung problems with blood flow to the lungs and if the clots reach the lungs, it can cause a pulmonary embolism. That blocks the flow of the blood. In order for the lungs to function properly, there needs to be a competent blood flow to the alveoli. Timothy: This is a fairly difficult question for someone as into music as myself, I listen to a wide range of genres from post-hardcore, to folk, to classical, to indie, to various forms of avant-garde/progressive music. As a matter of fact, when I was out of high school I first wanted to get a degree in music and teach at a university, and I currently play both piano and guitar (less frequently lately). The best I can do is try to break apart some themes and listening tendencies that are more common. First, I tend to like music that has a rougher DIY aesthetic that’s very common in the more avant-garde/punk/low-fi indie circles, and I like vocals that are imperfect, distinct, and full of personality (Modest Mouse) rather than perfectly performed vocals. While an aesthetic doesn’t espouse beliefs I think people are drawn to these things because of a desire for authenticity in their own life, and the stories that are told in these genres often have a lost and heart-wandering feeling, such as Car Seat Headrest’s stream of consciousness lyrics which deal with social rejection, finding yourself, and the typical lost love. Still figuring myself out, I identify a lot with these both lyrical and in the production ethics, and it’s more real because it’s quirky and bumpy in the arch. Ironically the other common theme is often at odds, but not always, progressive, or thematic storytelling. Progressive rock/indie groups like The Decemberists tend to tell colorful (often dark) songs about fictitious and historical events full of drama and various lessons, and I think these convey stylized themes that cover nearly the whole spectrum of human emotion, from the most hated aspects to the softest caring aspects. Fixating on a single theme is so hard to do in any artist or genre, and I tend to like my music to do this so many of the artist’s I love to tend to be varied in the values they write about, but I clustered around self-discovery, love, and heart-ache because I’m in that place in development now. Amanda: First off, I would like to say that I don’t really listen to music unless someone else is playing music or if I am out somewhere and there is music, which makes this question a bit hard for me to answer. Terry’s love for music made him leave home in search for a career because it was his passion. From that scene he built up his own self-image. If I had to pick music that I enjoy, I would have to say country music. Not many people enjoy it, but when I hear it, it brings me back to being in a car seat and my mom is driving with the windows done just enough that my hair is going everywhere. I may love the outdoors because of all the country music that sang about dirt roads and such. A bunch of songs talk about living in the moment and having a good time. I never thought about it too much, but I do tend to focus on the little things and try to have a good time. I am often told that I have many stories, but I believe this stems from my enjoyment of paying attention in the moment. I can tell a long story about the littlest things. Maybe storytelling came from listening to music that tells a story, such as most country music. Bianca I think the most challenging parts of sexual abuse would be knowing your value and having sex with a significant other. Once you are sexually abused you feel like you have no worth. That you are just downgraded to a tool for sex. It would be hard to make sure you know exactly who you are and what you are worth. People in society could also make it sound like you aren’t telling the truth or you are just being very sexual. So making sure you do not give up on yourself image would be a very challenging part of sexual abuse. Also after being sexually abuse you may not ever want to have sex again. You may think of sex in a very negative way because of what had happened to you and so having sexual intercourse again may not be something you can handle easily. A big strength would be communication skills and emotional intelligence. As a sexually abused person you would learn to communicate your feelings more efficiently with the people in your life. You could learn your emotions and what triggers them. You may even be able to learn how to regulate your emotions. Sexually you would be able to communicate your needs and things that you dislike or acts that may trigger you. You would definitely need a strong support system and therapy to help you through your experience. Christie: At the end of the case study the book titled “The Courage to Heal: A Guide for Woman Survivors of Sexual Abuse” by Ellen Bass & Laura Davis was recommended as an excellent resource. This week we had the opportunity to read about Joanne Sheridan and her childhood experiences dealing with sexual abuse. Regarding the discussion post, there are many ways this question can be answered. In no way, shape, or form is it easy to experience something like this. The most challenging part of sexual abuse is not the isolated incident(s) itself, but healing from it. We read the story, and we watched the videos attached to this module, and we can conclude that dealing with sexual abuse as a child is a traumatizing experience that completely changes you. As a child, sometimes you may not understand what is going on, or how to express your feelings, or how to advocate for yourself. Everyone copes with it differently. Some may act out or become reclusive like Joanne, or repress feelings. Some may move on as if it never happened; no one person is the same. There comes a time when a child grows up and if you have an inkling of self-awareness, you can see how it plays out into your adult life. You see the way it impacts your relationships, trust, the way you navigate life etc. You may become regretful because sometimes you might want to blame yourself or wish you knew better. You may become bitter or upset. Sometimes you are literally crippled by the little boy or little girl that still needs healing. I’ll admit it was difficult to read parts of Joanne’s story. Not to compare her story, but I experienced sexual abuse as a child by a family member and I see how it has impacted me, even today. To be transparent, a book that really helped me was a book titled “Healing the Soul of a Woman: How to Overcome Your Emotional Wounds” by Joyce Meyers. This book has been a catalyst for me in my healing journey. A strength that could come from moving forward is simply in the question itself. Making the conscious decision to move forward and not let what happened ruin your life – to go after your healing is real strength. Healing is an ongoing journey nor is it linear; there are many ups and downs. Making the choice to not be bound by your past experiences is a start. There is beauty in that
