Answer: Causation is important in some crimes, for example, homicide, where it is necessary to link the accused’s acts with the victim’s resulting death. This is to assure that a defendant is not held responsible for the death of a victim who is injured by a defendant’s acts but who later dies as a result of an unrelated act. In contrast, the offense of theft (and many other crimes) results in an immediate loss of property making causation irrelevant.
