Debate Majority or Minority Rule?
Read this excellent review of Majority vs. Minority rights from the Annenberg Classroom: Read this article in Democracyweb which presents the historical context for understanding of these issues. Next, review some of the issues in our practice of representative democracy today as discussed in NPR, ones which the Founders hadn’t considered when creating the Republic: The two key questions in the Annenberg article guide our debate
For your first post, answer the questions raised in Annenberg: “When, and under what conditions, should the rule of the majority be curtailed in order to protect the rights of the minority?” and “…when, and under what conditions, must the rights of the minority be restrained in order to prevent the subversion of majority rule?”
For your second post, consider and respond to the following: Would you want reform of these (sometimes) constitutional principles raised in the NPR article if they violate majoritarianism? What are you willing to live with, and what would you change? Lastly, what are the consequences of making significant change to our existing structures? Are those acceptable?
Please read the articles in order to answer the questions. If you have any questions please let me know.
