Death Politics-US Mexico Border
The final, take-home exam is composed of two essay questions, of which you must answer both. Final exam essays need to be at least fourpages in length (2 pages per question). The 5th page will be the
“References Cited” or “Bibliography” page.
Your final exam essays will be assessed based on a) your deep understanding and critical reflection on central concepts, theoretical texts, and arguments analyzed in the assigned class readings and b) your ability to produce nuanced and engaging analyses of issues pertaining to the class, c) as well as the exposition of clear arguments with appropriately referenced evidence and citations.
Make sure that you answer both questions; each question needs to be 2 pages, 4 pages in total (the bibliography will be your 5th page).
QUESTION 1 (two pages): In what ways practices such as Prevention Through Deterrence (PTD), the privatization of the detention system, and/or border securitization and surveillance have normalized the systematic violations of migrant human rights as well as the deaths of migrants and refugees who are crossing the US-Mexico Border or the Mediterranean Sea?
Required Readings for Q1 (make sure that you incorporate all 3 of the readings listed below when answering Question 1):

QUESTION 2 (two pages): In what way, the gender identities and sexuality of refugees and asylum seekers increase their vulnerability and exposure to violence and persecution, against the backdrop of often racist and homophobic refugee-asylum regimes?
Required Readings for Q2 (make sure that you incorporate both readings listed below when answering Question 2):
➢ Gorman. 2016. “Containing Kassindja: detention, gendered threats and border control in the United States,” Gender, Place & Culture: A Journal of Feminist Geography, 23 (7): 955-968.
