Dobson 4 MAT Review: Instructions
The 4 MAT Review system is a way of responding to readings that requires the learner to interact with new ideas on several levels. Students will complete a 4MAT Review on Dr. Dobson’s (2004) book, “The New Strong-Willed Child: Surviving Birth through Adolescence,” OR Dobson’s (2012) book, “When God Doesn’t Make Sense.” Choose one of the books and follow the 4MAT guidelines provided below.
The review needs to be formatted using APA style. Use the Template provided.
Please use the following description to guide preparing your 4 MAT Review:
Summary (Knowledge of Content):
Summarize the core points and information in what you have read. Recognize and identify core points in the text. Define, describe and explain the points. Be sure to present a clear, tight and concise summary. Include specific key points and details. The summary needs to be dense with core information from the text. Add in citations since the information is summarized from another author’s work. (1-2 pages in length).
Concrete Response (Comprehension of Content):
Get vulnerable! Relate and describe a specific personal life episode to which core ideas in this book connected. Discuss the life event and explain how it connects to core points in the text. Interpret your life experience in connection to core points in the text. Provide citations to connect to the text. Relate your story in first person writing style. In the teaching style of Jesus, this is a do-it-yourself parable, case study, confession.
You will remember almost nothing you have read unless you make this critical, personal connection that indicates comprehension of the material. This is your chance to tell your story and generalize ideas from the book to your life experience. (up to one page in length).
Application (Application of Content):
How does information in this book influence how you are going to continue your own personal growth process? What actions or changes are you going to make in your life as a result of your learning? What actions do you see yourself adopting based from ideas in the book? Use key points in the text and construct a plan of how you will use the points to guide your personal growth. Demonstrate how you might use specific key points in your life. Be precise in summarizing your action steps. Relate this discussion in first person writing style. Provide citations to connect with the information in the text. (up to one page in length).
Reflection (Evaluation of Content):
What new questions pop up for you in response to what you have read? Keep a rough note sheet at hand as you read. Begin with questions like, “What key points are lacking in full explanation?” Where do I not agree/strongly agree with the author?” or “What bothers me/excites me about this content?” Present a discussion that critiques, assesses and evaluates the core information. Argue core points or topics, fully defending your position. Provide citations to connect with the information in the text. (Up to one page in length).
