Pursuing Operations Management Discussion
You should arrange to interview with a professional that is in a position you’d be interested in pursuing.
Identify a member you might most be interested in interviewing. For example, if you would like to become a supervisor of a company you may want to interview a supervisor.
Be strategic, this is an opportunity for you to get to know someone better that you may not have had an opportunity to connect with.
Before you contact your interviewee, do some basic research about the career field. Clarify, for yourself, what you hope to gain through this informational interview.
When contacting your potential interviewee, you should do the following:
State who you are
Share if you were referred by someone
Explain that you are seeking career information and advice
Let them know this is for an assignment for your university
Ask when would be most convenient for them to meet
Be confident and courteous in your communication
Email or call them and use professional communication
During the interview you should:
Dress and act professionally
Build rapport and demonstrate your interest in the information
Take a list of questions with you and a notebook for notes
Keep the interview to 30 minutes or less
Take a business card when leaving
You should also follow-up with your interviewee
Send a short thank you note a day or two after the interview
Keep interview information on file for future reference—they may be an important contact in the future
You will be required to submit a list of both closed and open questions that you used for the interview with a brief summary of the information learned from each question.
You will present a five-minute oral report for the presentation to the class.
In the report, you will touch on the information that you learned following the interview
Information should be related to communication that you learned from the interview
You should have an introduction, body, conclusion, and transitions.
