Week 8 Government Services Discussion
What is contracting out? In your opinion, what public services should definitely not be contracted out and which should or could be contracted out? Why?
CLASSMATE’S POST-Dayatra Spalding
Contracting out is when government agencies use contractors to complete the work. Deloitte, Ernst & Young, Booze Allen are some of the big firms to names but there are hundreds of small businesses that are contractors also.
The smaller businesses usually derived from people who came from a one of the big firms, figured it out and opened their own contracting firm. The larger firms bid on proposals, more than likely win but within that contract some of the work has to go to the smaller firms… spread the wealth or in this case the business.
Public services that should not definitely be contracted out in my opinion are Police, Military, Motor Vehicle Administration things along those lines, what should be contracted out and are companies that deal with DOT, building bridges, large scale street repairs, non-profits – homeless services, welfare to work programs, jail diversion programs, government cleaning services.
There are thousands of contracting agencies but I believe thus far the world has it correct as to what gets contracted out and what doesn’t. Although these contracts are won by that agency, it doesn’t mean that the government doesn’t still monitor the contract, O they do and if the contractor isn’t running the project correctly or the way the government wants it to run they agency takes a chance on losing the rebid and no agency wants to lose a contract big or small.
week 9 DISCUSSION QUESTION
In examining the different branches of regulators, which branch—the executive, the judicial, or the legislative—seems to have the most authority to manage regulation and why?
CLASSMATE’S POST LaToya
At first, I was leaning more towards the legislative branch since they make the laws; however, after careful research and consideration, I am leaning in favor of the executive branch. The reason I picked the executive branch is that that particular branch is tasked with enforcing the laws that the legislative branch has made. The executive branch includes mayors, police officers, and sheriff officers. They make sure to enforce the laws and to provide punishment when needed/ when the law is broken.
week 10 DISCUSSION QUESTION
What are some of the purposes of legislative oversight? As a citizen, why would you be concerned with maintaining legislative oversight?
CLASSMATE’S POST LaToya
Congressional oversight refers to the review, monitoring, and supervision of federal agencies, programs, and policy implementation, and it provides the legislative branch with an opportunity to inspect, examine, review and check the executive branch and its agencies. As a citizen, it is important to keep the integrity of those making and enforcing the laws. If the executive branch is not correctly and fairly implementing laws that can cause problems such as violence coming to the forefront and negligent practices. One example is the laws concerning gun violence and gun laws.
As a nation, it is concerning to entertain the idea of having children when I have witnessed many mass shootings. It is concerning as a citizen when I think of the senseless acts of violence and bringing back “older” laws that can set back the United States and its “progress.” It is alarming to think that there is no accountability for not enforcing the laws set in place or better oversight tactics.
