For this final writing assignment, you will be creating a four-page newsletter. You will want your newsletter to be a work of art you will be proud of and you can use in your portfolio while searching for your first job after graduation.
Assignment Scenario
This will carry through from your logo and brochure project. You are to create a four-page newsletter in MS Publisher to communicate with an audience with whom you are working. Thus, the content of this newsletter must relate to your business.
This assignment should be submitted in two parts:
Part I: The Plan
Download and complete the “PLAN” for the newsletter. In this plan, you are to tell me:
Tell me (your instructor) who are YOU and who are you writing to?
Write a brief one paragraph description of the scenario.
Who is publishing the newsletter and describe the audience for whom the newsletter is intended?
Who are you?
What is your business or service?
Who are you writing to and about what?
Remember that this newsletter must relate to your business. It is very important you put yourself “in the shoes” of someone in your field to study. It is difficult to write the news articles if you don’t have a clear understanding of who you are, what products or services you provide, and to whom you are communicating with.
NOTE: Your readers (audience) should already know who you are and what services you offer. You are providing this information to me, your instructor, so I can understand who your audience is.
What are you telling your readers (audience)?
Give them NEWS, NEWS, NEWS! This is a “NEWSLETTER” …NOT A BROCHURE! The content should be primarily about what is happening now – what is new and different since your last newsletter. They already know about all your services and products; tell them something they don’t already know.
This is NOT an informational publication on how-to’s, tips, etc. – it is a newsletter. Also keep in mind your newsletter should be one of a series of “on-going” issues. And the author is your company or organization, not you personally; the word “I” should never be used except in one column labeled “From the Editor” “From the President”, etc.
In the spaces provided on the plan form, write a short description of each of the six news articles that you intend to include. This description should be no more than one paragraph, or maybe even one very descriptive sentence, per article. This “plan” due date is posted on Blackboard. The purpose of this plan is two-fold:
Part II: The Newsletter Layout & Design
This instruction sheet provides general information regarding the written content. A VERY DETAILED instruction sheet will be provided regarding the layout and design requirements for the newsletter on Blackboard at a later day.
Body Text
You must include a minimum of six (6) articles, each having their own heading. This will allow approximately two news articles per page at an average of approximately 175 words per article. You will reserve page four for continues from previous pages and for items such as a calendar of events, “mailer”, etc.
Text included in this newsletter should be original prose (written by you practicing the writing skills covered in your Blue of Grammar textbook).
You should type the single-spaced body text into separate Word documents, as appropriate, and “place” or “insert from file” these documents into your publication file. Body text must be 10 or 12 point in a font from the “serif” font family. At this point, you should be concerned only with the content of these six news articles. ALL formatting and headlines should be added after you have placed these documents onto your publication.
One rule often quoted in writing courses: write, re-write, and re-write. While the content of this assignment is to be your own written work, it is recommended you have someone “proof” your work.
