Semester Papers: Presentations and Final Papers

The last two assignments related to the semester papers are: (1) presentations in a conference-panel

type setting with a discussant; and (2) the final written papers.

Deadlines

Presentations: Due in class on November 29 and December 6. I will randomly assign each person to one

date or the other. For group presentations, each member of a group must contribute to the

presentation.

Papers: Submit via iCollege before midnight on December 6, 2022. On the class iCollege site, under the

Assessments tab, there is a “Final Papers” folder that you should use to submit your final

papers. For group papers, include a statement of each person’s contribution.

Presentations

I have organized the presentations as a panel consisting of three or four papers with a discussant (either

myself or another faculty member). Each presenter (individual or group) will have up to but no more

than 15 minutes to deliver their presentation. I will time these. The presentations should cover the

following:

• The research topic, motivation, and research questions.
• Connections to research literature, especially but not limited to the literature covered in The

Growth of Incarceration in the United States.

• A clear statement of the hypotheses.
• The data used and their suitability for addressing the questions and hypotheses.
• Variables used in the analysis, including a discussion of measurement error.
• Methods used in the analysis.
• Findings and results.
• Discussion of how the findings and results contribute to knowledge, with special attention given

to how the findings and results build upon those in The Growth of Incarceration in the United

States.

• Conclusions, if any, and recommendations for future research.

Presentations should give more emphasis to methods, results and findings, and discussion and

conclusions issues than on background issues.

Presenters should be prepared to respond to questions from other class members and discussant.

Present results in PowerPoint slides or handouts. This is so that persons listening to the presentations

have content to review during the presentations. If you email me your slides or handouts, I will print

them out and bring them to class; however, if you want me to bring copies of your slides or handouts,

deliver them to me by email no later than 3 PM on the date of your presentation.

I require that everyone attend both presentation sessions, preferably in-person but virtually if

necessary. Recall that class participation (e.g., questions posed and responses) is part of the final grade.

Final papers

These should follow the same general outline as in the presentations. You should emphasis the data,

methods, results/findings, conclusions, and recommendations. The papers can be no more than 20-

double-spaced pages using a 12-point font with one-inch margins. Tables and figures do not count

against the 20-page limitation. Number all pages, tables, and figures. Include a complete bibliography or

reference list; this does not count against the 20-page limitation. My preference is that you use APA

format for the references, but you may choose another format. Be consistent in use of one format for

references.
