Racial, Ethnic, and Cultural Identity and Counseling Individuals with a Disability
Racial, Ethnic, and Cultural Identity and Counseling Individuals with a Disability This unit focuses on identity development and counseling individuals who have a disability. Identity, a social and historically constructed concept contributes to self-confidence, stronger relationships, integrity, and self-actualization. But what if your (or a client’s) identity has been challenged by oppression, discrimination, and racism? In addition to exploring racial identity development for persons of color, this unit also examines White identity development, White privilege, and how Whiteness might impact the counseling relationship. Additionally, we will examine the counseling relationship with clients who have a disability and the unique challenges this population experiences nearly daily. Objectives:

Readings and Resources
Readings and ResourceseBook:Sue, D.W., Sue, D., Neville, H.A., & Smith, L. (2019). Counseling the culturally diverse. John Wiley & Sons.Working with diverse clients necessitates the need for counselors to understand racial/cultural development, specifically focusing on conformity, dissonance, resistance and immersion, introspection, and integrative awareness. At each of these levels are attitudes/beliefs which are integral to one’s identity, manifesting in how a person views the self, others of the same minority, others of another minority, and majority individuals.
White racial identity development models create an opportunity for White counselors to take an inward look at their racial awakening and how that related to multicultural counseling and therapy. Individuals who are less aware of their White identity are more likely to exhibit racism, compared to White individuals who are greatly aware of their White identity exhibit a higher level of multicultural competence, higher positive opinion of diverse groups and are better able to develop a therapeutic alliance with clients of color.
There are over 55 million Americans with some level of disability, and over half have a disability that severely impacts their daily life. Disabilities can be physical and mental, and individuals with a disability have historically experienced discrimination and isms, such as ableism. Due to the number of myths and beliefs about individuals with a disability, counselors need to be accurately informed about resource availability, reproduction, employment capabilities and to assess their own bias or discomfort around individuals with a disability.
