Costco Research- Comparative Company Analysis
Section II: Comparative Company Analysis. In this section, you are looking for articles on your company’s competitors or articles on companies in similar industries experiencing the same type of problems you outlined in your research question and hypothesis. Discuss competitor’s problem, how the problem relates to your research, the solution implemented, and the viability of applying that solution to your organization’s problem. Remember, the focus here is to explore key theoretical concepts in the research literature to see how they apply in other companies and, ultimately, to the situation in your company.
Below is my problem statement, research question, & hypothesis
Statement of the Problem:
The main problem with Costco is that they plan to raise membership fees in response to the current inflation, making them more expensive than Sam’s and BJ’s wholesale clubs. Products are becoming more expensive due to inflation, but the company has not yet recorded a decrease in earnings. The increase in membership would mean that they do not abide by its mission to offer high-quality goods at the lowest possible price (Widener, 2019, P. 167). The high membership in Costco can prevent some potential customers from becoming members and instead choose Costco’s competitors, which have a lower membership fee. The inability to attract customers could cause a loss of revenue for the Company. Raising membership prices could also lead to existing members canceling their memberships or not renewing them, which could negatively affect the firm’s financial performance. Costco also has a substantial dependence on membership fees. The firm generates significant revenue from membership fees, indicating that a change in the number of members would also affect the firm’s profits. The research aims to identify the causes of high membership prices and how they have impacted Costco through qualitative data collection methods. Furthermore, the study also aims to identify possible solutions to the problem that the Company can adopt.
Research Question:
Costco is experiencing the cost of inflation and has decided to raise the membership price. How much impact will it have on consumer retention?
Hypothesis:
If Costco continues to provide top-quality products and services, premium membership fees are unlikely to negatively affect member subscriptions because members will continue to value the benefits they receive from the company, feel that their fees are justified, and maintain their loyalty to the company.

40-38 points
More depth/information is required for the context and importance, otherwise the study detail will be unclear. There is no search history information supplied. |
83-76 points
There is a review of important theoretical literature, however there is limited integration of research into problem-related ideas. The review is just partly focused and arranged. There is research that both supports and opposes. A summary of the material given is provided. The conclusion may or may not include a biblical integration. |
52-49 points
The content is somewhat ordered, but there is no discernible organization. The use of typeface, color, graphics, effects, and so on may sometimes distract from the presenting substance. It is possible that the length criteria will not be reached. |
Poor Quality
0-45% |
37-1 points
The context and/or importance are lacking. There is no search history information supplied. |
75-1 points
There has been an examination of relevant theoretical literature, but still no research concerning problem-related concepts has been synthesized. The review is just somewhat focused and organized. The provided overview of content does not include any supporting or opposing research. The conclusion has no scriptural references. |
48-1 points
There is no logical or apparent organizational structure. There is no discernible logical sequence. The use of typeface, color, graphics, effects, and so on often detracts from the presenting substance. It is possible that the length criteria will not be reached. |
