Universal Design Project Overview
This two-part assignment requires you to study concepts and fundamental components of
universal design. You will utilize comprehensive checklists to observe and analyze early
childhood settings for evidence. You will specifically examine three areas: 1) environment
for learning, 2) curriculum and standards, and 3) support for language and literacy.
You will submit the completed observation documentation and a reflection paper that
includes: 1) summary of findings including strengths and improvement areas, 2) evidence
analysis, and 3) recommendations.
Classroom Observation
You are expected to visit a classroom of your choice. You will need to schedule at
least two visits (approximately 2 to 3 hours total).
[You can visit centers such as a faith-based preschool, publicly funded or employersponsored childcare center, a Head Start center, public school prekindergarten.
Other options are a family child care home, Montessori or Reggio Emilia programs,
multiple intelligences school, YMCA, university or college laboratory school, a large
chain (e.g., KinderCare, Goddard Schools, Bright Horizons, Stepping Stones, etc.),
and preschools in charter or magnet schools.]
Required!
If you are not able to complete these observations in a live classroom, you must
obtain approval from your instructor before selecting the alternate option.
Using photographs provided in the course, you will analyze an early childhood
environment. You will utilize the “Environmental Photos for Universal Design
Project” found in Unit 4.
NAEYC Key Assessment
Students are expected to demonstrate knowledge, understanding and application of the
following standards.
and learning.

education.
Project Requirements
You will work on this project in Units 4 and 6. You will conduct eight observations utilizing
textbook assigned readings, checklists and examples.
Complete and submit the Universal Design Assessment
This one document contains sections for all checklists, analyses, overall reflection and
recommendations.

Write specifically and objectively: a) what you see, b) what is present in the
environment (materials, equipment such as technology, furnishings),
Analysis and Reflection
Imagine you are the teacher and this is your classroom. You have used this tool to
conduct a self-assessment of your environment. Now, you will examine this classroom to
ensure universal design. What are the strengths, challenges and needs? What changes
would you make?
Reflect on the entire project. Review all checklists. Demonstrate, in explicit terms, new
knowledge you have gained about universal design from observation, data collection and
documentation, and analysis.
NAEYC Standard 5a
For each checklist area observed, you will need to write a paragraph addressing:

Literature Support
91-84 points The context and relevance of the issue, as well as a clear description of the study aim, are presented. The history of searches is discussed. |
Methodology
58-53 points With titles for each slide as well as bulleted sections to group relevant information as required, the content is well-organized. Excellent use of typeface, color, images, effects, and so on to improve readability and presenting content. The minimum length criterion of 10 slides/pages is reached. |
Average Score
50-85% |
40-38 points
More depth/information is required for the context and importance, otherwise the study detail will be unclear. There is no search history information supplied. |
83-76 points
There is a review of important theoretical literature, however there is limited integration of research into problem-related ideas. The review is just partly focused and arranged. There is research that both supports and opposes. A summary of the material given is provided. The conclusion may or may not include a biblical integration. |
52-49 points
The content is somewhat ordered, but there is no discernible organization. The use of typeface, color, graphics, effects, and so on may sometimes distract from the presenting substance. It is possible that the length criteria will not be reached. |
Poor Quality
0-45% |
37-1 points
The context and/or importance are lacking. There is no search history information supplied. |
75-1 points
There has been an examination of relevant theoretical literature, but still no research concerning problem-related concepts has been synthesized. The review is just somewhat focused and organized. The provided overview of content does not include any supporting or opposing research. The conclusion has no scriptural references. |
48-1 points
There is no logical or apparent organizational structure. There is no discernible logical sequence. The use of typeface, color, graphics, effects, and so on often detracts from the presenting substance. It is possible that the length criteria will not be reached. |
