You will write a 4-5 page paper (does not include Title and Reference pages) on Motivation, elaborate on how to use the concept of motives to understand personality following the instructions below. This paper will include a review of the literature and relevant theory and a discussion of how the topic you have chosen might be affected by one individual difference variable (gender, race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, culture, age, religion, disabilities).
In this paper you are required to cite and reference at least five sources and your textbook. If needed, you can include additional citations and references.
Step 1: Research your topic. You should start your essay with an opening paragraph that introduces your topic. Subsequent paragraphs should include a thorough review of the research related to your topic. A good way to start this process is by finding a research article cited in your textbook or one covered during class. You will want to look specifically for original research articles that have an Introduction, Method, Results and Discussion section.
Step 2: Discuss individual differences. You should include a discussion of how your topic might affect or be affected by one individual difference variables (gender, race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, culture, age, religion, disabilities). In your explanation, be sure to provide evidence from relevant research to support your assertions. For example, if I suspect that gender might impact personality, I could search for evidence of this idea by searching for articles on gender and personality.
Step 3: Relate your topic to a published theory. What theories are related to your topic? To answer this question, you may find it useful to look for review articles (e.g., Psychological Bulletin & Psychology Review). You can do this by checking review articles in your search in Psych Info. For example, if I were interested in depression, I would search for review articles on this topic. I would relate the findings of articles I read in step 2 to the theories I found in step 3. Then, I would critique these theories and determine if the available research did a good job of supporting the theory. When assessing the adequacy of each theory it is OK to give your opinion (subjective analysis), however it is not ok to use first person (Do NOT use I, me, we, our, I believe, etc.).
Step 4: Future Directions/Conclusions. Now that you have familiarized yourself with the theories and current research on your selected topic, what future work is needed to further the field’s understanding of the topic? What questions do you think are still left unanswered?

I have copied and pasted some quotes from the textbook for you below that I suggest you use :):
“Individual differences in motivations can be assessed by observing behavior across time and situations. This is, however, a difficult and time-consuming process. Is there an easier way to measure motivations? Standardized self-report tests like the Personality Research Form (Jackson & Messick, 1967), which was based in part on Henry Murray’s theories of needs, can sometimes do a good job at assessing motives by forced response to short standardized items. In a different sort of self-report approach, personal goals can be assessed by asking people to write about those things that are the focus of their daily efforts. In these cases, participants know something about their goals.”
“People with a high need for achievement are persistent and even driven to succeed on tasks that society sets out for them. They enjoy individual challenges and may obtain a string of college degrees or a shelf of awards. They tend to rise to the top in business, especially if quantity is more important than quality, or if shrewdness or persistence can lead to triumph.”
“People with a high need for affiliation want to come together and spend time with other people. It is an intriguing motive because it prompts people both to have friends and to please their friends (to maintain the friendship). Such people may be extroverted, agreeable, and conscientious: They are extroverted because they seek the stimulation of other people; they are agreeable because they want to act friendly; and they are conscientious because they are dependable.”
“Murray also identified a need for dominance (n Dominance), which has come to be termed a need for power (n Power). People with a high power motivation naturally seek positions and offices that allow or invite them to assert control over others. We all know some people like this: They like to usurp the leadership of small groups, accumulate possessions, and control territory, although they may be quarrelsome and somewhat insecure (Hermann, 2005).”
“Another key motive involves the need for emotional communication, which Henry Murray called need for exhibition (n Exh). People high on this need want
ous to show themselves before others and amuse, entertain, excite, or even shock others. They are colorful, spellbinding, noticeable, dramatic, and showy. This is usually studied through a focus on their expressive style (Friedman, Prince, Riggio, & DiMatteo, 1980).”
