Communication Self-Analysis Research Report |
Self-Analysis and reflection is central to achieving communication competence. This is an ongoing process of monitoring, analyzing, and reflecting on our communication behaviors with a view to noting what we excel in and what needs improvement. |
Step 1 Prewriting Review & Organize Your Ideas: What will you write about? |
Review your journal entries and organize them into logical groupings. Look for patterns: common themes, settings, people, and/or any other way to group them. This is a preparatory prewriting phase to help you start to organize your ideas. |
Step 2 Describe: What did you do? With/to whom? When? Where? |
Type a ½-1 page description of yourself and your communication noting specific behavioral patterns you exhibit in communication based on the journal entries. This should be descriptive, not analytic, prescriptive or evaluative. |
Step 3 Apply & Analyze: Who are you as a communicator? |
Type a 1 page analysis of your description of yourself and your communication (Step 2). Look at the description you created and use it to explain who you are as a communicator. Apply at least 5 relevant course concepts (vocabulary terms) from any of the chapters. Each concept should be italicized and bold. Make sure to explain the course concepts using a mix of the textbook’s definition and your own words. Cite the textbook using a properly MLA style in-text citation and Works Cited Page entry. |
Step 4 Evaluate Yourself: How effective are you at communicating? |
Type at least 1/2 page evaluating the effectiveness of your communication style as reflected in your entries. Try to avoid drawing simple, shallow conclusions. Growth and development is only possible when we take the time to really see who we are and what we do when we communicate with others, so please invest in yourself and don’t rush this step or just jump to simple conclusions. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. Use this section to explore both of yours. What have you learned about yourself and communication that you did not realize? |
Step 5 5 S.M.A.R.T Goals: Who could you be? What will do to grow? |
In this section, begin with a 1-2 sentence transition and overview. Then create a numbered least 5 S.M.A.R.T Goals to improve your communication. Please specify particular course content (communication concepts, theories, and/or practices/strategies).
· 3 goals should focus on areas that need improvement based on the other steps · 2 goals should focus on honing areas in which you already excel |
Step 6 Finalizing |
· Write a 1 paragraph conclusion summarizing the research report and your findings about yourself.
· Write a 1 paragraph introduction that includes an organizational statement . · Double check: page count; font-Times New Roman 12 pt; spacing- double-spaced; grammar and syntax; use of subheadings: Introduction, Description, Analysis and Concept Application, and Evaluation, SMART Goals, and Conclusion; and MLA format for both in-text citations and Works Cited entries.
