THE PURPOSE of this assignment is to have you identify three ideas from the three units of the course that you find the most insightful and apply it to a sample of communication behavior. You will submit one application paper for each unit of the course (see the Course Schedule). The following guidelines specify the application paper requirements, which also function as criteria for grading. Your application papers are worth 150 points each (450 points total; or 45% of final grade). In 2-4 pages of content,
- Select and develop one idea.
- Your idea can reference a theory, a finding, or a construct (from the each of the three units in the course). Again, select one, and only one idea.
- Name the idea and paraphrase how the text defines Indicate the page number(s) from the text where you found the idea.
- [Order Now]Next, develop the idea. That is, in your own words, elaborate the meaning of the idea using the textbook’s content. You want to represent the various ways that the text presents the idea’s core content. Be sure to represent various factors or facets of the idea. In short, you need to provide a comprehensive representation of the idea’s core and related elements.
- Report a sample of relational communication. Here, you want to offer specific communication behavior that illustrates the idea. In other words, once you define and elaborate the idea, you need to preview your example dialogues with a summary or context. Then as best as you can, offer direct quotes from the sample of communication you chose. Legitimate modes of communication behavior include actual interaction behavior in a close relationship that you regenerate specifically, book passages that concretely illustrate relational communication, a film that features relational implications, and so forth.
- Offer what you think are sound results. That is, explicitly state insights you gained from applying the idea to your communication examples. At this point, you can also interpret why your application provides you with greater understanding of the idea.
- Conclude your paper by noting in one paragraph the strengths and weaknesses of your effort. In other words, elaborate on the positive aspects of your application as well as the limitations to your effort. Do not discuss the positive and negative aspects of the idea itself—instead, evaluate the merits of your paper.
- Submit a polished, well-written paper. It should be stylistically clear and grammatically clean. Be sure to use a style manual—either the one published by the American Psychological Association (APA) or by the Modern Language Association (MLA). I prefer APA though will accept MLA. Here are the sites for the Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) that contain the APA and MLA style guidelines.
