The Importance of Listening
In a 500 – 750-word (2-3 page) paper, reflect on a situation in your professional or personal life where poor listening skills created a problem. Briefly describe the situation, then spend the bulk of your reflection analyzing what went wrong in terms of listening and how, specifically, effective listening would have made a difference. Be sure you incorporate terms from the text of effective listening skills as you analyze the situation and suggest ways it could have been improved.

Discussion # 3: Proverbs
One of the many ways cultures is learned is through proverbs, or sayings, that give insight into the values of that culture. Some proverbs from the United States are “actions speak louder than words”, “the early bird gets the worm”, and “the squeaky wheel gets the grease”. Some proverbs from other cultures are “life is a dance, not a race (Irish)”, “a man’s tongue is his sword (Arab)”, and “a zebra does not despise its stripes (African)”.
Choose a few proverbs that you are familiar with from your own culture. Describe what the proverb teaches us in terms of the values of that culture. Pick a few proverbs that you are unfamiliar with (choose at least one from a culture other than your own). Describe what you think the proverb is trying to teach us in terms of values of that culture. You may have to do a little research to find proverbs from other cultures.
