Samantha: I believe the role of a child psychologist in the school system is a very important one. I think it can be hard for parents, especially those who are low income, to take their kids to see a psychologist or specialist for problems they may have at school. A school psychologist can see the child in the environment that he/she is having trouble in and then give him/her the tools to work through their problems. They are a great asset to the school system and can help children with an array of situations such as behavior problems to disabilities such as ADHD and Autism. I have worked with the school psychologist in my children’s school in helping them to overcome their disabilities and to get the most out of their education.
Megan: From reading and learning about all of the different areas of psychology, what they focus on, what treatment methods are usually used, what schooling and experience are necessary, and what a typical day as one of these professionals entails, (Plante, 2010) I still see myself focusing on Counseling Psychology. I definitely see myself counseling women survivors of domestic violence, in some way. After obtaining my Associates in psychology, and now being one additional class after this one away from my bachelors; I think if I go any further, it will be with a focus on social work from here forward. A Master’s and then licensing in Social Work will allow me to do this at many different Women’s Centers in my area. There have been many other areas of psychology that I’ve been interested to learn at least a little about in more detail, but Counseling Psychology would be my preferred choice and focus.
