Part 1: Below are three IT situations. CHOOSE ONE (only 1) to write about .
Analyze the business’s situation and then write (2 pages max) of your advice to the business about which IT topics they need to focus on.
Here’s a SAMPLE of one recommendation you might write: “This business relies totally on internet access so they needs to write an “acceptable use policy” (AUP) for employees and contractors to ensure minimum exposure vulnerability to malware attacks, and need to ensure highest availability of their network with good redundancy and effective boundary control.”
Situation #1: (Non-Profit) Home-Saver. “Home-Saver” is a non-profit that provides funding to poor families so they do not lose their homes. The business solicits for donations from local business and churches/temples/mosques and from local governments in order to gain funding. Families in-need of such funding learn about Home-Saver from websites or from religious organizations or from referrals by friends, neighbors, and local politicians. The leadership is always wondering whether they are providing the best value and fair treatment where there is the most need. Privacy is an issue because they don’t want to embarrass needy families by publishing names. Home-Saver does not have an IT department, they rely on volunteer activities to setup and administer PCs and servers and networks. They need to keep records for tax purposes to ensure their tax-exempt status as a charity organization. If ever they fail to deliver the required funding – lots of families will quickly lose their homes or apartments.
Situation #2: (Small Business) Route-Planner. This company has a new mobile app called “Route-Planner” which it sells to companies (or persons) in the speedy-delivery business. Most food delivery services send a delivery person out with multiple food orders to deliver in the order and by the route they think best. Sometimes the drivers make good decisions but sometimes they do not. Bad decisions mean they run into dense traffic, blocked roads, or choose a poor path for multiple deliveries. Route-Planner mobile-app connects to any other product-delivery GPS-based app (such as GMAP, WAYS, etc) and checks all possible delivery routes for multiple orders and gives the driver the OPTIMUM ROUTE to travel to multiple sites IN THE CORRECT ORDER. The idea is to get food delivered as quickly as possible with minimum backtracking or driving mistakes. The company has a contract with GrubHub but wishes to sign with Uber Eats, and DoorDash. Route-Planner wishes to expand into other industries that need speedy delivery to multiple sites such as couriers, medical test samples, etc. The company currently has 2 programmers and 2 file servers which are reachable by internet access.
Situation #3 (Large Business) IBM. The well-known company IBM spends way too much money on paper manuals and wishes to persuade customers to use online virtual manuals instead of paper-based manuals that currently come with all software orders. To make this program switch (from paper-based to mostly online) IBM will need an effective repository of manuals that are easily accessible from anywhere and are cross-indexed to share information, and are downloadable (at customer expense). They will need to ensure that only paying customers get access to these manuals and that there are multiple versions of each manual to go with the multiple supported version of each software product. IBM cannot switch all 1,000,000 manuals they currently print to this new scheme so they need to analyze the industry and determine which ones are the most likely to be used online first, and to determine which customers might defect to the competition if required to use online manuals . IBM will need to ensure their repository is highly available because thousands of customers will want access to this repository at the same time.
