College-2-Career Plan. (Grading Weight = 40 points). To prepare for their future careers, students will be asked to prepare a plan outlining their credentials, experience, and career objectives. To keep students “on track” with their plan there will be four deadlines through the semester to turn in draft versions of their (1) summary of life goals and objectives; (2) current resume; (3) a potential job posting; (4) an ideal resume; These deadlines are to keep students on pace to complete the final assignment and are not graded. However, failure to turn these documents in at the specified time will result in a deduction of five (5) points for each deadline missed. For the final assignment students will prepare the documentation listed below and present them in a professionally bound portfolio.
The final College-2-Career plan will include the following:
1. Summary of life and career objectives (5 points). Students should prepare a one-page double spaced summary of what they would like to accomplish in life. These summaries should include both personal and professional goals. Summaries should be fairly abstract and provide a narrative of what you aspire to be in life.
2. Current resume (5 points). Students shall prepare a current resume outlining their existing credentials as a potential employee. These should be of sufficient quality that students would be proud to submit them for a potential job for which they are currently qualified.
3. Ideal resume (5 points). Students shall also prepare an “ideal” resume. This resume should be a reflection of what the student would like to have accomplished by the time they graduate from PLU. This resume should include what activities / programs the student would like to get involved in on campus and in the community, as well as what jobs / internships the student would like to hold. In addition, they should indicate what grade point average the student would like to attain. These resumes are intended to help students achieve their post-graduation goals and objectives. These resumes should be of sufficient quality that the student would be proud to submit them for their ideal job (see below).
4. Current-to-Ideal Transition Plan (15 points). Students shall prepare a plan that will assist them as they transition from their current self to their ideal self. This plan should be approximately three pages, double spaced. It should contain a one-page summary from an exercise that we will perform in class, as well as a two-page narrative that describes how the student will transition from their current self to their ideal self.
5. Potential Job Opening (5 points). Students are expected to locate and print out an actual job opening (using the internet, career services, newspapers, etc…) that interests them as a potential career direction.
6. Cover letter (5 points). Students should prepare a one-page professional letter of application (i.e., cover letter) for the job they identified above.
