Here is my response:
Describe the state of the world, as portrayed in this reading. Be sure to include aspects specifically related to the environment.
The reading portrays a world that is starving as a result of environmental degradation, which has brought about severe food shortage. Additionally, the state of food shortage is worse than any natural disaster, such as hurricanes and storms. The supply chain of the city is fragile to the extent that orchards and rooftop gardens cannot sustain the 3 million populations of the city residents (Anders, 2018). Therefore, the world has been destroyed to the extent that it is not productive anymore. Besides, a significant percentage of what once used to be fertile land is filled with skyscrapers. The reading also explains how parklets and trees have been destroyed that is only trapped for pigeons and squirrels.
How do you think the world got to this state?
The world got to this state as a result of misplaced priorities. People were amused about the introduction and growth of smart technological cities at the expense of protecting and managing the environment and ecosystem at large (Anders, 2018). The world forgot that the ecosystem is a cycle that humans depend on for survival. The world and especially the leaders are not concerned about implementing policies that will protect the environment.
What decisions did world leaders or individual people make for the world to get to this state?
Every person is to blame for this disaster. Individuals on their part are comfortable with the way things are so long as it does not affect them directly. Additionally, the current generation and their leaders do not seem to care much about the protection of the environment (Anders, 2018). The result is a significant increase in global warming, which means that future generations will have a hard time surviving.
What different decisions might you have made, if any?
The primary decision would be to focus on environmental protection and minimizing global warming. Therefore, putting in place policies where people, corporations, and countries are held accountable for environmental degradation.
If you were in Mason or Jolene’s place, how would you deal with the food shortage and why?
Rationing what is available and adopting biotechnology in the production of food. The rationing would be done in such a way that infants and breastfeeding women are given a priority. The adoption of biotechnology in agriculture will boost the food shortage significantly.

The location in this story seems to be taking place in the future. The town they are in is called New Lincoln and is referred to as a “smart city,” meaning it has the latest technology and lifestyles. The main characters in this story are experiencing a food shortage because the food deliveries are not being made on time. In this futuristic world, the delivery trucks are self driving.
This world seems opposite from the other stories we’ve read. It seems luxurious and thriving while the other cities were struggling and seemed like a dystopia. This world must’ve gotten this way because people were prioritizing technological advancements over basic resources like food and water. I don’t think at the time these people realized they were taking as much away from the world as they did.
If I was in the same place as Mason and Jolene I would try and collect and save as much food as I could. I would want to share these resources with as many people as I could and make sure that people were surviving. I feel like I take for granted how easily accessible these resources are to me and I would have a challenging time adjusting to this new life.

In the short story, they have a shortage of food, which is a major problem within the world. The city in the story is very futuristic and they have self-driving trucks and advanced technology. Humans need food to survive and continue to thrive in society. The people in the story are blaming the food shortage on the self-driving truck deliveries that require no humans to drive. The world got to this state because people in the city stopped caring about the environment.
They only focused on the advance in the technology of New Lincoln and did not realize that they were going to struggle to survive. The people of New Lincoln should have prioritized their safety and the environmental conditions before trying to compete with other cities. They should have thought of a plan and leaders could have educated their citizens on what to do if something like this happens. If I was in Mason’s place, I would try to ration food to find another food source to try to help New Lincoln. I would also try to escape the city maybe and go to the suburbs because they seemed to have more food.
